Well, for what it's worth, I just started The Big Sleep, I've never read a noir book before, and it seems like a lot of fun.
I don't see the problem with genre fiction as long as its genres that most of the readers haven't explored before.

Not that I don't have enough opportunities to look stupid throughout the course of an average day, but why is The Big Sleep listed as a voting option for September? I thought it was the August choice.
And if not, wtf is the August book?

Substitute "fatties" for "plebes" and we've got a deal.
No, if I voice any opinion at all on a book it's done as "just another participant giving his two cents." Truth be told I'm thrilled at the participation level thus far and I hope it keeps up.
Maly: It is kind of confusing, but the "month" in "book of the month" refers to when the book will be discussed. For example, we discuss August's book (<U>Life of Pi</U>) on August 1st. We read September's book (<U>The Big Sleep</U>) during August and then discuss it September 1st.

I have this weekend to read most of Life of Pi. I've just read past his descriptions of the zoo... so I might just manage it!

I'm sixty-five pages in and still waiting for an exciting incident.

OK, so I'm still trying to work out how I managed to miss the original book club thread given that I browse commchat nearly ever day...
I'll get myself a copy of The Big Sleep for September's discussion. If I'm not too late, I'd like to suggest <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1844082687/sr=8-1/qid=1154510288/ref=pd_ka_1/202-0126668-8687801?ie=UTF8&s=gateway">I choose to live</a> for the October vote.
Might tempt votes from the Lolita crew :ebil:
Seriously though it looks an interesting read.
EDIT - just got <a href="http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=009&item=190006547976&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1">The Chandler collection volume 1</a> from eBay for £2.65 including delivery :D

Well I'm knee deep in the first Book of the New Sun atm so I can't be doing the Big Sleep (though I want to someday). But I'll second Noid's Heart of Darkness seeing as I have it and started it and really want to re-read and finish it.
