In the next poll, will you state the original title and language of the suggestions? I know I could always look it up myself, but that's no reason to have the info not available in the poll. With some authors you just can't tell, e.g. Yann Martel or Nabokov.
As I've said before, if a book isn't written in English, I'd rather read a German translation.

If that gets picked I swear to god I'm bowing out and starting a book club that only Noid and Ulukai are invited to.
We'll call it TOOK club and immerse ourselves in hobbit fanfiction
My suggestion is
THE WASP FACTORY
by Ian (Iain) Banks. I read it a long, long time ago in school but I've forgotten all of it and I really want to read it again and it was a good book!
failing that heart of darkness by joseph conrad or something

Hell no.
Feel free to provide this service if you feel there's a need for it but I already bust my ass enough as it is on the poll post.

You guys read Iain Banks in school? I don't think anyone over here has ever heard of him - I searched through tons of used bookstores just to find a single book by him.

He must mean outside school - English schoolchildren are fed a nutritious, yet strict, diet of Lord of the Flies, Animal Farm, An Inspector Calls, WW1 Poetry Anthologies and Shakespeare.

And the English blame their misery on the weather.

I think they might have gone over it in English. OnionBob reccomended it to me in the first year of what you Americans call "high school".

'Cry the Beloved Country' and 'Return of the Native' for A' level. Good books and everything but so miserable when your a teenager they nearly put me off reading forever.
I would recommend The Quincunx by Charles Palliser but it's nearly 1300 pages long and denser than a neutron star. I was out of work when i read it and it still took me a couple of weeks. I also want someone to explain to me what happened at the end because i couldn't quite figure it out :(

Seconded. If only so I'll finally have someone to discuss...
that... chapter with.
Also, another repeat if "you read Iain M. Banks in school?". Awesome school that.

We didn't even get to read Animal Farm in my school, I had to do it in my free time:(
