I actually noticed some months ago that the public poll result function on this forum was broken, cos the results weren't, umm, public. But I forgot to mention anything (sorry :o).

Please don't laugh at me, but I need clarification on this: since I suggested one of the books, does that mean I have to vote for it?
I'm a little uneasy on this, because this is a bit of a no-no in Germany. Candidates who have a vote are expected to cast an invalid vote. If you're awarded a prize, you don't join in the applause.
But if you expect me to vote for 'my' book, that's fine. (Rules must be obeyed.) Do we have multiple choices?

To further complicate things, is a simple majority enough? It seems rather weak when there are nine (or more) suggestions to choose from, as opposed to maybe three or four. Then again, deciding which books to include or not is difficult to do in a 'democratic' fashion. First come first serve doesn't really seem fair when we have different time zones to contend with.
Keep in mind that the "first come first serve" rule didn't cut anyone off until five days in. Out of the original sixteen candidates, only two were excluded for this particular reason. I don't think different time zones are going to be a problem.
Besides, how else are we going to do it? Nine candidates is difficult enough as it is, how other than "first come first serve" are we going to pare selections down without implementing some ridiculously complex pre-voting procedure?

I don't think so, vote for whatever you want. If you make a suggestion you are expected to participate, but as far as I'm concerned your obligation ends there.
All this talk of the "rules" of participation is a bit misleading, anyway. This is a book club, after all, and participation is strictly voluntary. The rules are really just suggestions.

You are not currently able to vote for more than one book per month.

Yeah, good point. I tried to think of some simple way to pare down the book selections, but they always degenerated into lists of rules and guidelines and other unnecessary bullshit. So option two for me, unless someone comes up with a better idea.
It's probably best not to deal with problems until they actually become problems anyway.
Also, I'm utterly thrilled with how this is going so far. Sixteen suggestions! Time to get our fiction on.

I wouldnt mind reading Master and Commander. However that The Big Sleep is certainly piqued my interest and so I guess if that wins then that'd be ok.
For the record, this is an excellent idea; I've been wading through the dirge that is the Bourne Trilogy the past few weeks and am in need of a good read.
Saying that, I just finished the most excellent Generals Daughter which I enjoyed immensely...and now I'm onto reading Jeremy Clarkston's books...
kill me now.

I have Master and Commander. It's subpar.
