..you can't get through school in germany without having read Goethe, and I figure it'll be the same for Shakespear in english speaking countries.
Oh yes, you can. I've read twice as much Shakespeare in school as Goethe. Schiller, OTOH...

Do they make you read Herman Hesse in German school?
Siddhartha is directly responsible for the one 'C' on my high school transcript. Grrr.

Really? I read Siddhartha on my own in high school and absolutely loved it.

I've had to read Unterm Rad (Under the Wheel) by Hesse, which is about the hardships of a pupil. There is no federal curriculum in Germany - each of the 16 lands has its own.
Schattentänzer on 5/9/2006 at 21:16
Yeah, Hesse is pretty common. And just about everybody I know had to struggle through Theodor Storm's Schimmelreiter, for whatever reason.
Anyways, I'm narrowing my nominees down to Dante, because Stitch has a point there.
Ignatios, as far as the book length goes - I've got a job as well and can only read on the train/on weekends/whilst taking a dump or whatever, but a month is a pretty long time. For Life of Pi and Big Sleep I needed little more than a weekend each. But I realize there are people around who haven't even that much time, so how about this:
I'll nominate not the full Divine Comedy, but only Inferno. The three parts are usually available in seperate volumes with around 300 pages each - so people with a larger book appetite may read into Purgatory and Paradise if they like, but 'officially' we'll talk about Inferno.

I'd like to suggest Ender's Game by OS Card.
Great SciFi with the reason why you shouldn't play those "educational" games. ;)
A book about playing games and surviving on space-stations by hacking, bending the rules...
I want to re-read that book soon.

I'd kind of suspect that most of the people on TTLG have already read Ender's Game - but maybe it's only taught on school around here?

nah I did it for school in Sydney. Great book, but apart from that and xenocide, I found most of his others quite dissapointing

Just a small reminder that there are less than 24 hours before I end the submission process (lol) and the next poll is opened. If you want to make a suggestion, get that shit in now.
