Fuck you Vigil, I wanted to have a chance of winning this month :(

But, I would -humbly- reccomend rechecking some crucial details about the sinopsis (i.e. the guy in question was -not- married to the woman in question, amongst others).
Having not read the book (I just fancied trying some Marquez) I think I nabbed that summary from Amazon. Thanks for pointing it out - they really are crap, aren't they?
I'm fairly sure the blurb about Denisovich is accurate!

A most noble task to dig into Gabriel Garcia Marquez's works. I'll gladly re-reccomend One Hundred Years of Solitude (Cien Años de Soledad) as his master work.
And if you're interested in some more magical realism authors I'll point out to The House of Spirits (La Casa de los Espiritus) by Isabel Allende, her IMHO best work.
Right now I'm reading La Reina del Sur (The Queen of the South would be the literal translation) by Arturo Perez-Reverte (Spaniard author), this book deals in great part with my hometown and the whole drug business. Places, the modisms and expressions used by people around there and such. Kind of funny and interesting to see your hometown from an outsider's perspective. Fun read.
I have to ask, since I haven't kept track of the Book Club threads of the past: anyone submited any Jorge Luis Borges yet?
I think any compilation of his short stories is a thing of genius and beauty...to read his work, anyone can do...to understand and grasp all the layers it contains...that is more taxing. Woo...

I haven't started Kavalier & Clay yet, though I already have a copy. This one is at least twice the size of Motherless Brooklyn and I doubt I can finish it this year.
I just got my copy last night and balked at its length too. I doubt I'll be able to finish it in two weeks.
Seeing as how things seem to be slowing down a bit and December is really busy for most people, I propose that we read Kavalier & Clay over December and January to be discussed in February. How does that sound to everyone?
If yes, then all the suggestions so far in this thread would be read in February and discussed in March.

The type is rather large for most editions of the book, and the plot moves fast. I've always been a speed reader though.

This time I went down to the bookshop and they actually had a copy of the book club book. This is fortunate as I'm flying over to Boston in a couple of days so I'll have some hours to kill while my lad sleeps (hopefully) on my lap. I realised I haven't actually read any fiction since re-reading the Hitch-Hiker's Guide last christmas...
Incidentally, my paperback edition here has 636 pages of relatively small type, so it is quite a read. It's almost as long as The Three Musketeers...

Seconded. Not only would this grant us a bit more breathing space for ...Kavalier and Clay, but it would also give the book club a small break, which it seems to need, judging by the dead-on-arrival reception this month's book club threads have received.
Anyone else agree or feel differently?

Thirded. My copy will probably arrive post winter solstice, and I won't have much time for reading.

I'm back! I missed out on some good-sounding books. School sucks... but its over now so I'll be joining in shortly.

Kavalier and Clay ACQUIRED
I'll be ripe and ready in February.
Confusion in March, hopefully.

Actually, the way this book is starting up it may not take as long to read as some might think, despite the length, but Feb is still a good target for discussion.
