Some became big stars on stage and in the computer field but then they were just people with the same interests as me. No big deal.
It's just cool. Six degrees of separation and all that. I've always been fascinated with seeing people in person that I've only ever heard about or seen on TV or something. Concerts are a big deal for me. Broderbund games were a significant part of my childhood, so it's cool to know someone who's connected, even if only slightly, to that company.

I can't believe you people are in here talking about Thief! Pshaw!
I actually played TDP on a PC Gamer demo a friend gave me. Very dark time for me - I had just been diagnosed with my heart problem and told OH TEH NOS YOUR GOING TO DIE!! by a doc who didn't really know. So, whacked out on blood pressure meds, I decided to spend my remaining days playing video games (how hard core is THAT, bitches???). Played Bafford's, freaked out, went and spent the week's grocery money on TDP. I played for 27 hours straight from the time of install, pausing to pee and get food. Made it all the way through THC IIRC. Finished it within a few days, then did it on Hard and Expert. Decided to write some walkthroughs for a Thief fan-site that was low on content (can't remember the name - some angelfire domain). Had no clue about TTLG, Lytha's or Thumpers pages, etc. Bought SS2 and was like, WTF??? Took me about six months to make myself finish it, now I think it's the best game ever, behind TDP. Playing it again right now as a matter of fact.
I remember somehow Dan (Digital Nightfall) came across the walkthroughs and asked me to move them to ttlg, so Keeper Chapel was born. At first I was confused about the TTLG/LGS relationship (knowing fuck all about PC games at the time, much less the gaming industry - I'd only gotten an actual PC in 1998) and thought Dan was one of the Thief devs. Hung out in ThiefGen forever until the T2 fervor died down, then started making T2X with Avalon, GBM, and Raen. In the midst of that I got burnt out with Thief and started hanging in the Nuthaus, where I constantly fought with Noid and RBJ (because, let's face it, those guys are assholes), got arse raped by Duckeh a few times, and figured out what the hell was going on. I was an idiot, but eventually loosened up, started enjoying myself, and then T3 came out. Everything went to shit, but here I still am.
This is the only group of people I've ever met on the internet that I want to meet in RL. They may all turn out to be homicidal maniacs, but I would consider it a privilege to have my man parts stored in any one of their freezers.

More stories as to how people got here? Well I can add mine. :)
Back in 2000, my father was diagnosed with a high-level prostate cancer. He's a very vivacious fellow, so it was quite a blow to our small family. I had been eying Thief 2 because of the nifty box art, but wisely chose to pick up the first one to start, mostly to help take my mind off our situation. Loved the game, but had a problem with one of the controls, so sought out some help, which landed me here. I found the help without posting, so my first post was instead a fangirlish one about Garrett (WHAT. Don't judge me.). I regret nothing. :p
I loved the community instantly - passionate about the series (and games in general), dorky and hilarious! Soon after arriving, I became involved with T2X and made some life-long friends there. After a while I drifted away and explored other areas of the internetz (most notably a certain chan), but checked in here every now and then to see how people were doing.
Thief is STILL my favorite game, and I've played it all the way through many, many times.

How'd I get here? I'd already played TDP & TMA two or three times and was looking for another Thief-like game when my husband (now late) told me about this great forum he'd found and that some people on said forum HAD ACTUALLY CREATED THIEF FAN MISSIONS! For the next few years I just logged on with his member name since all I wanted to do was download more FMs, but eventually realized there was some pretty interesting stuff going on here in TTLG, so joined under my own name (well, half of it actually).
TTLG has something special; a sense of community you just can't find anywhere else. Coming back here is like going home for a visit - kind of gives me the warm fuzzies, ya know? Not to mention some of the hilarious flaming and zings that have become epic and still make me laugh. (My all-time fave thread will always be (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=100941&highlight=supermario).)
My TTLG friends were there for me when I needed support and the kindness and generosity of all here helped me through the absolute worst time of my life. There was the time when my modem committed suicide and I had to use a friend's PC to log on to TTLG. A week after I posted that it would probably be awhile before I could afford a decent modem I received a package in the mail: lo and behold there was a brand new modem, kindly donated by a fellow Taffer! (I won't mention any names, but his initials are TBE.)
Though my visits here lately have become rather sporadic due to RL, I still keep coming back 'cuz there's no place else like this in the whole universe and never will be again.
*sniffs*
