The tobacco companies aren't defeated; Their products are still the best-selling items at liquor/convenience stores everywhere. The commercials may be annoying to us because we've seen enough of them already, but they're most likely intended for young people who are still inexperienced and less exposed to tobacco issues. What's the matter? Can't you guys switch channels or simply peel your eyes off the boob tube when something annoying comes on?

Hrm.. I could just make a Nazi propoganda-Truth campaign link, but thats just too damn easy.
The Truth campaign isn't really informing anyone at this point. Most of these commercials are just propoganda/scare tactics, and not even terribly effective ones. They havent described any of the side effects of smoking, or said "Hey, smoking is bad. It'll kill you" in years, instead they've had a bunch of people go on camera and either: A) Guilt trip you into not smoking (Like the one where a smoking company sent a womans dad a power drill for being a customer for 10 years. Even though you needed to send in something from the pack to prove this in order to be eligible.) or B) Show the people that DONT smoke, and try and make them seem like the most gosh darned fun folks around. (The guy who got a tongue piercing, then turned down a cigarette with 'You damn crazy foo?!'.)
Perhaps a commerical or two that actually said "Inhaling smoke + Doing it for a long time = Lung cancer" or anything that one might find on the god damn side of a pack of cigarettes, this would be a seperate matter.
Ps. Packs of cigarettes are more informative about the side effects of smoking then the multi-million dollar 'Truth' campaign. :tsktsk:

Do you own a tobacco farm or something? Anyway, I wouldn't have any idea as to how effective or informative the Truth ads are, but I can also tell you that reading that informative crap on the pack is NOT the fist thing I do when I reach for my smokes. I DO know that I wouldn't want my child to start smoking, because 1) it is an expensive habbit/addiction and 2) any carbon based plant matter that turns into smoke when burned will deposit tar when inhaled, and last I checked tar deposits impede effective breathing. Let's cut the crap. Nobody goes around recommending cigarrettes for good health any more.
Effectiveness set aside, how can something that tries to deter people from taking up health hazard possibly be a "Nazi propaganda"? The funding for the campaign comes from awarded lawsuit settlement against the tobacco companies, so it's not like they are airing the ads to pitch a product. I'm sure there is monetary compensation to be gained on the part of those behind the ad campaign, and certainly in the eyes of people who see smoking as merely a part of their lifestyle this maybe all just ineffective and annoying BS. Nonetheless, Nazi propaganda doesn't seem remotely close to what this really is. Well, you seem to think it's too damned easy. Maybe you should go ahead and show me how easily you make that connection.

If you dont want your kids to smoke, then sit down and talk to them. Explain that inhaling smoke is bad, and that nicotine is an addictive product that has been proven to give a person lung cancer, heart problems and might need them to get a penny sized hole cut in their throat to breath with. In fact, if the Truth commercials would go back to actually saying these kinds of things instead of trying to prove some kind of abstract point by doing various skits and whatnot with people who probably dont give half a shit in either direction, then I wouldnt pay half a thought to the commercials. At the moment however, I certainly hope that a parent who belives that their child might either start smoking or currently is will actually say something.
As for nazi propoganda (And for the love of fucking God, remember this is because you asked.) :
A) Both represnteds an extreme view point, that sounds pretty rational when they're the only ones you've heard talking about the subject.
B) Both are slowly trying to demonize a minority, and taking steps to try and segregate them. (Tried to smoke in a restruant, bar, or any public place lately?)
C) Both are portraying a group that they belived to be evil, scheming and planning more horrible things then ever and MUST BE STOPPED! WOOO!
D) Both are government funded (I'm pretty sure Truth is.. Might have been DARE though.)
E) Both have avoided anyone to point out the flaws in their arguments, or gone for an informed view point in the clip-ettes they show of people on the commercials.
-------------
Once again.. I dont belive that Truth is run by nazi's. I may think that they are dishonest, decieving and playing on a subject that makes their opponent easy to look evil if they ever encounter opposition.

Hm. I guess it would only make sense for any ad campaign to use common propaganda techniques whether they were used by the Nazis or Mr. Clean. They seem to have a reason to push this campaign along, although in the end I doubt that it will have the desired effect. The only thing that would be effective, IMHO, is to give the tobacco companies an incentive to give up their most profittable operation, which could only mean something that translates to more profittable and sustainable alternative. Good luck with that, I suppose.

Don't Godwin the thread.
Anyways, Nazi propaganda actually accomplished something. I doubt "Truth" has done anything other than annoy people that watch it.
