The Truth thing is just a stupid waste of money, that's all.
I don't think there's anyone who is smoking for their health, and if there are, they're the people who don't have a TV, or look at magazines.

For those of us not stateside, what exactly is the "Truth" thing?
Chimpy Chompy on 27/8/2006 at 01:18
I've no idea myself, but it's probably something you could look up in less time than it takes to get an answer on a forum.

Well I figured it was an anti-smoking campaign all by myself, and Wiki tells me it's funded by the tobacco companies as part of the class action suit against them, but I was really looking for something more specific. But thanks for the snarky answer :thumb:

Truth is an anti-smoking campaign that has frequently shown commercials that seem to make a pretty convincing case, but really do turn out to be less then what they are presenting.
For example: Never ONCE have they engaged in an actual debate (On camera or record at least.) in which they would need to present evidence, cite it, and explain when its from. Oddly enough, the majority of the 'secret tobacco documents' they refer to are from the 1950-60's.
Following this, they haven't ever even interviewed an actual tobacco executive, medical expert or anyone else who could provide some insight into the matter. Instead, they have gone to doctors offices and asked if they should call 'Zephyr' (A term used in an internal memo for lung cancer.) cancer, and nothing else. Then there was a commerical where they went to a matress store and requested that they stop selling matresses, since another internal memo said something to the tune of 'What the hell? Most people die in they're sleep, lets ban that!' in whats hopefully sarcasm. This is a habit of taking one or two lines from an entire document, then making it sound like a general sentiment.
People decide to smoke, and there happens to be a surgeon generals warning on the side of every pack of cigarettes sold in the United States. Considering the fact that theres a sign that says 'Smoke this and you die.' on the side, I dont think the 'truth' thing is really required at this point.

Alls I know is that condescending, monotonic, jew-fro having, Buddy Holly glasses-wearing prick makes me gnash my teeth to the point where I go "Hey man, chill. You're getting yourself worked up over some asshole on TV who you could just as easily find in real life by walking down to a Starbuck's or maybe a renegade local coffe joint called THE BLUE MONKEY or THE EDGE and anyways what I'm saying is that instead of shooting at your TV like Elvis you could just find this guy in real life or someone like him and....fuck, I guess just kind of sneer at him and feel really uncomfortable because you always feel under-cool around people your age and it's quite embarrassing so it's like you can't take girls ANYWHERE and oh my god you're going to die alone aren't you AREN'T YOU YOU TWISTED LITTLE DWARF"
Yeah dude Truth commericals :nono:

I doubt there has been a propaganda campaign in history which has done this. The explicit purpose of any such campaign is to present a one-sided view of an issue which favours the propagandist, not to evaluate competing evidence and draw a reasoned conclusion.

It's a damn commercial, holmes. I don't understand why you're expecting debate camp on television. Even the REAL debates on TV aren't debates. What sort of crazy upside-down world do you live in where propoganda and PSA campaigns engage in socratic dialogue?

The original truth commercials had people explode. Those were alright and got the point across: smoke and you could die. The later ones were just awful. I don't know what the point of airing them is supposed to be. What the fuck does it matter to me what some tobacco executive issues in a memo to his employees? It kind of reminds me of that SNL skit where the winning candidate for mayor kept airing commercials making fun of his defeated opponent.
