After reading a bit of the origins of DEUS EX, and Warren Spector's design document, I was wondering what TROUBLESHOOTER (the working title for DEUS EX) might have been like if it were developed while Warren Spector was still working for Origin. I imagined it as having the same interface and gampeplay of SS1, while maybe utilizing an engine similar to the '95 Alpha engine for the first UNREAL (or just a really enhanced version of SS1's engine). i think the game was supposed to be set during the late '90s (around when the game is concieved). How nonlethal combat, stealth, and ventilation shaft exploring would have be handled in TROUBLESHOOTER might've been a challenge considering the technology of the time. It do wonder if it would've be possible to create large city scapes, rooftops, and achitecturally complex buildings with the SS1 engine (or with an technology available at the time). I also wonder how complex the decisions would've been in TROUBLESHOOTER if Spector had managed to develop it then.
How would you visualize Spector's Pre-DEUS EX if he developed it under Origin as TROUBLESHOOTER?

Interesting, where is this document you speak of?
Also on topic wasn't there a beta of the original game that was quite different?

Oh my God! It's Warren Spector! :D ...Oh, wait. It's
Warren's Spectre :erg:
I hope you like the brief joke, for introduction's sake.
Here's the link to a lengthy background piece on DEUS EX containing Warren's original pitch for TROUBLESHOOTER to Origin.

The proposal is right at the bottom of the page. It's definitely quite an ambitious game idea for 1994. (Plus, there's plenty of cool information about the development of DEUS EX).
