I guess either a)I'm stupid, or b) I missed something along the way (or c- all of the above.
First of all: I shut down the Oblivion Gate at Kvatch with no small amount of toil and bloodshed. However, I remember it being a fairly easy time of finding my way around, getting to the top of the main tower, getting the Sigil stone, and shutting the thing down. But I've slept since then. Now I go into a gate and I can't figure out anything! I wander around looking for towers, but can't find a way in, or I go about in circles trying to figure out what to do. I can't seem to remember how to open the huge gates with the "this gate is opened remotely" message - and can't find where the levers are. Do all the gates close the same way? What am I doing wrong?
Secondly: What's the process for using a soul gem? Mine are empty and I can't figure out how to trap a soul in them. I'm sure this is done using a 'trap soul' spell or some such, but I feel like I've missed an important instruction along the way. I've used soul gems that I've found to enchant my sword and would like to be able to trap souls on my own.
Thanks for any help...

1) Oblivion gates tend to require that you do something in order to gain access to the main tower. Look for other, smaller towers containing switches (at the top, naturally) that you activate to open gates or extend walkways. You may also need to travel through caverns to get there, so look for doors with big a big daedric "O" on them in the rockfaces. They're roughly the same color as the rock so they're easy to miss, but they'll show up on your map like a normal door (with one exception, but it just leads to some bonus goodies).
2) Find a critter that you want to trap, cast a Soul Trap effect spell on it, then kill it while the Soul Trap is still active. If you've got an empty gem in your inventory with a big enough capacity, it'll get filled.
BTW, you can create custom spells that trap and kill critters in one casting by combining Soul Trap with damage or Drain Health effects.
