I bought Morrowind (GOTY edition) a few days ago on seeing that its had some very good reviews, and it got won 'Game of the Year' and 'RPG of the Year' in 2002. Also, I found a fun little description of it at Penny Arcade which made it sound brilliant. The only thing that put me off buying it was when I saw that a few people in the General Gaming forum seemed to really hate it. Anyways, now I've got it, and its realy growing on me. Its a bit overwhelming at the moment because the only other RPG I've played before is System Shock 2, if you can call it one.
And now I'm stuck at one very annoying bit that doesn't make much sense and was wondering if any of you guys could help me out.
I'm in Balmora, and I've joined the Thieves Guild. One of the first orders that Suger-Lips Habasi (gotta love the name) of the Thieves Guild has given me was to fetch him a diamond, advising me that Nalcarya of WhiteHaven has them (but that I could get him one from anywhere). When I first went to Nalcarya, she seemed okay with me, willing to barter and everything, but at the time I didn't have enough money to get one. Then I went off and did some errands, joined the Fighters Guild (and did a bit of thieving) and managed to get myself over 300 um.. credits (can't remember what the game currency's called). However, now whenever I go back to Nalcarya, her disposition towards me is zero, and she won't let me buy that damn diamond off her. As far as I know I've not done anything to directly upset her, the only thing I can think of is that she really doesn't like the Fighters Guild. At one point I got so fustrated I decided to try and steal the diamond from right under her nose and make a run for it, but her personal guard stopped me and I payed the fine and lost the diamond. It was fun though. :)
Can anyone help me?

You'll find them in chests in dungeons, or if you want to buy them from other merchants. You really should have that many problems in finding them, even if Nalcarya is of no help.

Well...I have no idea of why her disposition went down but the easy way to that quest is.
Go up stairs, pick the lock on a small chest up there and inside. 3 diamonds, 2 for you, 1 for the theifs guild
But a future warning, Don't EVER try to sell Nalcarya ANY diamonds(except cursed ones which summon daemora lords), the game keeps track of what you have stolen but not each individal item so if you go drop those diamonds then get some others and sell them to her then she will acuse you of theft.

You need a diamond? Here's my easy method for any level character
1. Be prepared to be a courier
2. Go to Caldera - mages guild can transport you for a small fee, ask people in mages guild until one offers travel (mage nearest the Khajjit)
3. Leave Caldera from the North - continue along path until you reach a naked Nord
4. See that group of rocks on a small hill past the the Nord? Look around them until you see an Orc.
5. Talk with the Orc and do him a favour in return for a 'present'
6. He'll give you a note and you take it to another Orc in Caldera - she lives in a house possibly to the right of the steps to the big castle place - easy to find her anyway.
7. She'll give you a note to give back to the male Orc - sigh -
8. Return to the male Orc near the Nord and ask him abut the note, then about your present.
9. Hoorah!!!! the present is a DIAMOND!!!!!!!!
10. Go back to Balamora (no need to say that but I wanted 10 steps ;) )

Thanks people, I think I'll do the lock-picking thing. I'll have to get another lock-pick though. Now if I just remember where I got my last one from..

Someone in the thieves' guild will sell you one.

I ended up getting one by successfully pickpocketing some guy in the something-club (you know, the one opposite the StiltRider) who happened to have one. I managed to get the diamond for Sugar-Lips, then he wanted me to get him a key for some manor-or-other (these log-winded names of places and people are so hard to remember :)), which he said I could get from either the manors owner, or his servant.
When I tried getting it from his servant, I used the invisibility potion but still couldn't manage to pickpocket him (I'm guessing its because I've heard that once you touch something, you become visible again, and there were too many people watching in the surrounding area). So then I went straight to the manor's owner to try and pickpocket him, but couldn't manage to do it without him detecting me, despite my sneaking. In the end, I got a bit fed up and I decided to kill him and steal everything he had on him from his still-warm corpse :).
When I went to give Sugar-Lips the manor key, he said he couldn't pay me for it because he'd heard that the owner was dead, which made things very difficult for him, but he gave me my next job anyway. I just love the way there's proper consequences to your actions in this game!
Ooh, come to think of it, I can make myself a bit of easy money by looting the whole of the manor and selling all the guys stuff. Woo!
I'm currently on another side-mission for someone at the Fighter's Guild, who wants me to go and fetch him some special box thing from some ruins somewhere. I've followed the directions he's given me and got to the bridge he said I need to cross. The only problem is that it seems to be guarded by some Necromancer-type dude who has a nasty habit of attacking me with magic fireballs and summoned skeletons with huge-ass hammers. Ah well.
And one final thing, I'm meant to be a thief with a skill for Marksmanship, which apparrently includes throwing knives and short bows. The throwing knives work fine, but when I bought a Chitin Bow and some Chitin Arrows to go with it, I can only seem to equip the bow but not actually be able to fire anything from it. I've tried dragging the arrows onto my bow once equipped, but that doesn't seem to work. Help!

You should equip the arrows like you would equip the bow... it kinda acts like equiping a quiver of arrows. Have fun playing Morrowind :)
