Tribes 2 Engine for $100 ... TN2! - by Digital Nightfall

This can easily be a full-force TTLG-backed project. Also can easily be as ambitious as any fan-made mod out there. I'm psyched to see something happen with this!

I've been contemplating that since they first announced V12. One hell of a lot of work there, and I'm really not sure I'd have the time or the ability to work on it myself (I hardly get to play games, let alone make one!), but it's so tempting to give it a bash.
My plan (with the luxury of being all in my head) was reasonably ambitious -- create a 'TN engine' flexible enough that we could subsequently add media and associated code or scripting to create new games. Specifically, I want people with Terra Nova to be able to download a separate package that will grab all of the media we want (terrain, audio, video, mission briefings, etc) from the first game, along with some (hopefully) improved graphics, and add the mission details and code to tie it all in to the TN engine, resulting in an updated version of the original game. (I figure the missions scripting would be created from scratch to replicate the original, rather than attempting to somehow extract and convert that as well!)
Sound convoluted? Well the idea was to avoid licensing issues. Any game created with the V12 engine has to be published (whether freely or as retail) through Garage Games. I wanted to create something that had no direct use of TN properties, but could be made to be just the same as the original game with the appropriate '3rd-party support', which means neither GG or ourselves have any legal concerns about what we're doing with the V12 engine.
(You see? Making games is easy when you have nostalgia, imagination, and don't actually try to do it ;)

Their probably selling the Tribes 2 engine so cheap because of all the bugs.

Well, if ya ask0rz mez0rz; the original Terra Nova has far greater view distance than Tribes 2. And T2 seems to have a rather particular graphical personality. I dunno.
But after playing Operation Flashpoint (well, the demo), I realised that it's amazingly similar to TN. The view distance can be doubled in the editor, apparently, above its already generous level, and the spritey trees and stuff are just soooo TN. :D
Plus the AI is good, and the single playerediness of it is more amenable to recreating TN or TN2.. just a thought. I think the USA troopers will have Op Flash on their store shelves fairly soon, they can check it out then. :) Shame it runs like crud on my ancient PC, but thats progress. ;)

Don't judge OFP by the demo oRGy. The full version is far, far better that! I bought it mainly because I was looking for something a little different. I bought it a little over a month ago and I'm still trying to get through the campaign (I've been busy also). The missions just get better and better, the further you get in the campaign.

Yeah, operation flashpoint is a game that really has me excited. About terranova: If you can, go for it! I bought a demo of the game on ebay (the guy was selling it as the "full version" though, bastard) and I loved it. I thought the game was so ahead of it's time (as almost ALL LGS games are). One thing that irked me was the FMV. I couldn't stand those. I actually got nauteous while watching them sometimes from the digital cheese.
