On one hand, I've never seen a Michael Bay film (though I swear everyone I've ever met has seen Armageddeon) so I can't really judge...but going by the trailer and this guy's track record, you'd have to pay me to see the film.
As Zylon notes, there are a lot of cool things you can do with giant robots. Cause they're just a thing - a good story can be built around any device. It just requires a bit more effort than "HEY LOOK EVERYONE ROBOTS BLOWING THINGS UP PAY US MONEY".

So much more? Like what, a character-driven study of one man's internal collapse? This is a movie based on a toy-driven cartoon featuring robots from space with names like Laserbeak, let's not forget.
This just in: Natalie Portman SUCKED ASS in the new Star Wars movies.

There are blockbusters that are vapid affairs and those that have more substance to them. What I mean is that we could have a film that ticks all the epic boxes but which isn't a cheesefest. See Independence Day for how it shouldn't be done, and Spiderman 2/Batman Begins for how it should.

I think there is actually a fair number of people who wish she had done just that.

Dude, I don't think
anyone expects it to be a great film. It'll be a big fun dumb popcorn blockbuster feel good flick of the summer. That's what it sets out to be and most people will get what they expect. How could a movie based on an 80's cartoon possibly hope to be a "great film" anyway?
Just saw it earlier today, pre-premiere viewing.
Great film? No. The only thing it could ever hope to recieve an Oscar for would be special effects, but it does stand a decent chance of getting that one.
Good movie? Yes.
It wasn't particularily intelligent and it wasn't stupid. A fair amount of well placed funny scenes, several great action scenes (though some cuts were a bit too fast), a few too many talky talky scenes (but only a few) and not enough of Megatron ripping up the landscape (and bystanders). Interesting, yet still logical, way of ending the final battle.
Definately worth a ticket. And don't leave too quickly once the credits start to roll.

Just got back from seeing it, and yes, I loved it. It suffers a tad from Bay's trademark editing, and introducing the majority of the Decepticons in the third act was a poor bit of scripting, but it keeps all the straight faced earnestness that is, in my opinion, the heart and soul of the old Transformers cartoons.
It hasn't been grunged up, it's not "grim 'n' gritty," Optimus Prime acts in exactly the same manner as he did in the cartoons, to the point that even if Cullen hadn't been voicing him, it still would have been instantly recognizable to anyone who grew up with the character.
And it has giant robots beating each other up and stuff blowing up real good, so really, how can it go wrong?

Im seeing it next week over in NYC in the imax screen there (i think its showing at that one).
One thing though, is it true that you see for one moment...
the matrix, when prime opens up his chest?
...if so, thats awesome.

I can't remember if he specifically states that is what is shown, but something like it happens.

Far as I know, Transformers isn't going to be in IMAX. Even if it is, it won't be in NYC, it's Spiderman for another week or so, then Harry Potter.
Sorry (I was looking forward to IMAX too.)
