oh yeah, i forgot about that advert.
i wonder if they'll start from scratch; as in, assume noone knows anything about transformers and so explain the whole backstory - or maybe this movie will be the backstory...

But how are they going to do Soundwave and his tapes? They were the gheyest idea of all even though Soundwave in robot form was serious kickass and Ravage was the best toy ever (cat-robot form was just so sweet).
Probably the same way they will do Megatron. It's going to be hard to do original series transformers without Megatron turning into a handgun.
Well, hard to do without us and every other Transformers nut bitching about it.
I have Ravage somewhere at my parents place. Mmmmm Ravage <3

But Megatron could always turn into a huge shoulder cannon with tripod though. I wouldn't mind that. He was the worst toy because in gun form he was just too big. I never had him anyway, he was for loosers :p Soundwave only became tape recorder when he was being packed away. Love his batteries -> guns though.

At least Megatron looked more or less like a real gun, as opposed to that goon Shockwave.

They were from space or I think and had their own planet or something. But really, when we're talking about giant robots that conveniently transform into lorries or sports cars or whatever, I think you grant them a certain amount of flexibility in what's believable right from the start. Also the point was to sell toys.
Oh shit, what if they have some horribly contrived explanation for them in the film! Possibly involving shadowy government projects and computer AI gone wrong! Oh no, this is a terrible thing to have hanging over my speculation for the film!

I know they came from another (robot) planet but I don't know who started all the robot building. It was something I always liked about it, the pointlessness of an eternal war without meaning. Zoids was a bit like that wasn't it?

God, I hope not.
If you read the comics, their origins are tied into an original struggle between Unicron (an evil chaotic god who took on giant-robo-planet form) and Primus (another God who built Cybertron) but it's not been explained in full detail and I doubt the movie will go into it. They don't really know the full story themselves.
