Eh, it's still construction vehicles combining to form a truly titanic robot.
Believe me i don't have high expectations here but Devastor failing to closely match his G1 appearance really isn't a major point against.

The action looks a little bit better in this one. I found the action in Transformers to be a little lackluster tbh, which was doubly odd as its massive f'ing robots smashing crap up!

While it is only stupid transformers, there is a certain charm to the old designs. These new ones are sort of an extension that 'infinite number of improbably sliding plates' school of CG. So there doesn't always seem to be any compelling reason for them to turn into just a car or whatever, if you're that adjustable.

Agreed. This is my issue with the new Megatron. He's just too amorphous. A few of them retain bits of the vehicles though. Prime (of course) but Blackout and Bonecrusher obviously have bits and there is a certain something to be said about it.

Is the new megatron even supposed to look like anything?
The impression I got (admittedly I was drunk) was that a large number of the decepticons seemed to be "'large grey spiky robots" that transform into "large grey spiky..things that can fly, or something".
Which was pretty lame.

Only Megatron afaik. The rest are all specific vehicles. In part 1 anyway.

Well I went and saw this last night, and got pretty much what I expected, which was Michael Bay's semen dribbling out of the corners of my eyes. The film pretty much backs up the theory that Michael Bay does not experience your human emotions, but instead tries to mimic them as best he can. The film veers awkwardly from straight-up action with lots of shaky-cam and slo-mo to improvisation-heavy situational comedy. Some of the comedy works, like Sam's mother accidentally getting high and embarrassing him at college; some of it doesn't, like the introduction of some "hilarious" wise-cracking robot twins. The film needs to decide whether it wants to be an action-comedy, in which case it needs a lot more slapstick and punning during the battles, or a straight-up action film, in which case it needs to lose the out-of-place sit-com stuff.
Also, Megan Fox is an attractive girl, we know this already. And in a film with a proper script she's probably a good actress. But Christ, it's like Michael Bay looked up 'objectifying women' in the dictionary, and went "THAT'S what I want for my script!" and it just comes across as lecherous.
The action scenes are pretty much the same thing as he's been doing for years, with the added addition of having to rip off a few new films whenever actually pathos is needed (there's a scene where Optimus Prime dies, which is almost taken directly from the Fellowship of the Ring where Gandalf dies, with the same muted audio, music style, camera angles and shots of faces looking back in horror as they are dragged away.)
All that said, I've had worse evenings. It pretty much did exactly what it said on the tin, which was more Transformers. If you liked the first one, you won't need any more brain cells for this one.

Agree with everything you say.
However its not a bad thing what Bay does with women in his movies; he does it full on in your face and you get what you expect - theres no subterfuge in any way.
I actually liked the story he's gone for and am curious about the third film now. I will admit to groaning a bit whenThe Fallen says "my apprenticcccee" when I half expected Megatron to start breathing deeply with "my masster". but thank god that didnt happen.
All in, everyone I was with - a group of 2 guys and 2 girls enjoyed it as a fun and entertaining movie. Good on Mr Bay!

lots of shaky-cam
Is it as bad as in the first movie?
God, I hate shaky-cam!
Megan Fox has to spend the entire movie without putting on a single piece of clothing for me to be content with the shaky cam overuse ;)

I couldn't say if it's as bad as the first one because shaky-cam never bothers me so I don't really notice it unless I'm specifically looking for it. There was no point where I couldn't tell what was happening anyway.
