I uninstalled T2, then rebooted into safe mode and reinstalled from the original T2 disks, as before; as before, I was unable to install from the original TG disks -- same error message.
After returning to unsafe mode, I patched it again, opened the scripts, (did one other thing, for convenience's sake), and tried to play.
Still the same or similar problems. When I try to play the OMs, the game CTDs as soon as the first mission is about to start. I haven't tried installing the FM yet; I figure if even the OMs don't work, certainly the FMs won't, either.
What's happening? What am I doing wrong? Or what is the software doing wrong, and how can I fix it? This is maddening... one of the major reasons I invested in this nice, new system was to be able to play Thief without constant and massive slowdown of framerates... but now I find I can't play the game on the new system at all.
Does anybody have any thoughts, suggestions, helpful advice? Please? I'm totally stumped -- but then, I'm not really a technically oriented person. I hope there are many possibilities I haven't tried yet...
Thanks,
Dafydd

At a suggestion, I ran DxDiag; here are the results:
* OS is WinXP Home Edition 5.1 build 2600 (SP3)
* BIOS is Award Modular v6.00PG
* Motherboard is Gigabyte EP45-UD3R
* Processor is Intel Core 2 Duo (I used a program to set Thief2.exe to use only one of the CPUs on that processor)
* Memory is 2046MB
* DirectX version is 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
* Display is nVidia GeForce 9800 GT, integrated RAMDEC, 512MB; display currently set to 1680x1050, 32-bit color, 59 Hz; monitor is an Acer LCD monitor
* Main driver is nv4_disp.dll
* Mini VDD is nv4.mini.sys
* DDI version 9 (or higher)
* Sound card is an external USB, SB X-Fi surround 5.1
Hope this helps someone diagnose my dilemma... and thanks!

Wow, DDFix sounds promising; it's very late here, but I'll download all the files and give it a try tomorrow.
Thanks! Digits crossed...

You could also check your display driver version (under the main driver info) and search in Legacy Gaming Tech Help for issues with drivers - I know some people have problems with particular drivers.

Holy cow, DDFix seems to have worked. I can play the OMs; and I was able to load up the Seven Shades of Mercury, load my last savegame, and play!
I guess that was the problem: Thief is just too old to run well on modern systems without the Geritol boost that DDFix gives it.
Thanks, the Brain!
