I'm trying to switch my Thief playing to a newer, better computer I now have. Here is what I did:
1. I successfully installed T2 on the new machine. (I tried and failed to install TGold on that same machine, but that's a problem for another thread!)
2. I installed the 1.07 to 1.18 patch.
3. I installed all the various scripts I found (three major ones -- Telliamed (1.54), Nameless Voice (1.1.0), and Gaylesaver (I just now checked, and I think these are all the most recent versions).
4. I copied all my FMs from the old machine to the new, in a corresponding directory.
5. I downloaded, installed, and configured DarkLoader 4.3.
6. I loaded the particular mission I've been playing -- the Seven Shades of Mercury.
7. I copied all my savegames from the old to new computer.
8. I started T2; the SSofM load screen appeared, and I selected Load.
9. I loaded the last savegame... but the game crashed as soon as it started to play.
10. I tried starting the mission from the beginning, and it appeared to play; so for some reason, it can't seem to comprehend the savegames.
I really don't want to start all over again; does anybody have a thought or suggestion what could be causing this problem and what I do to fix it?
Thanks,
Dafydd

The savegames may have been saved from a different version of the FM and/or a different Thief2.exe.
To check the first: On the old machine, load 7 Shades in Darkloader. Then copy miss19.mis and HammerA.gam from the old PC to the new one.
To check the second: Also copy Thief2.exe from the old machine to the new.

I regularly exchange saved games from FMs among several computers, and usually there is no problem with that. In theory, your approach should work.
With The Seven Shades of Mercury (version 1.1), however, I had problems loading some saved games even on the computer where I saved them. This happened in the area below the Cathedral where there is a metal bridge over a lava lake. If I save there and reload that game, Thief 2 crashes to the Desktop and will only work again if I restart the computer. In all other areas I have reached so far, saving and reloading works normally.
If that's not it, then I have another idea.
When I exchange saved games, I exchange the zipped saved games found in the allsaves folder of Darkloader. When I do that, I always select and "install" the Thief 2 original missions from within Darkloader. I do not exchange saved games from inside Thief 2's saves folder.
I think your way of exchanging the saved games should work, but I do not have much experience with it.

Thanks, I'll try those suggestions... (Fingers crossed)

Hm... I tried all three of those things, but I still get the same result.
I copied miss19.mis, HammerA.gam, and thief2.exe over from the old system (where the same FM is and has been installed all this time) to the new; then I copied over DarkLoader's entire allsaves directory (which in my system was a subdirectory under the Thief2 directory); then I used DarkLoader to load the OMs, then again to reload the Seven Shades of Mercury.
The initial screen looks all right; but when I try to load any savegame, I get the crash to the desktop (with the cheerful suggestion from Microsoft that I should send them all the info about the crash... yeah, what are they going to do about it?)
Not only that, but I think I have to correct one earlier point: I tried playing from the start, and I saw the water... but then the game froze. I could still hear the audio, but I couldn't move or turn.
I had to use the Task Manager to quit; and while there (it took several tries), I noticed the CPU usage was 99% to 100%. So I don't think it's a savegame problem at all. For some reason, Thief2 isn't playing properly. It's just eating up all the (considerable) CPU power and freezing.
If you need to know my system configuration to make any suggestions, please tell me also how to find out that information (preferably something already in Windows XP SP3 or a free download, rather than something expensive I must buy!) I think I have an Intel Core Duo CPU, but I can't remember offhand the exact model... I saved the box, but it's off in a storage facility and hard to access.
This is really frustrating; I have a great computer system, but so far, I can't use it to play Thief!
Thanks,

All right, using the FAQ, I discovered that Thief doesn't like multi-CPU environments -- which includes a single CPU that is a duo or a quad. I used the (
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/guides/hyperthreading/) imagecfg fix here to get the installation so that it will at least run from scratch.
However... it still crashes to the desktop if I try to load any savegame,
including one I saved after making the imagecfg fix. It won't start up from any savegame at all, whether made on the old machine or just now on the new one.
There's nothing in the FAQ about this. Since I don't think I can "Ironman" this mission, can someone please make another suggestion? I'm stumped.
Thanks,
Dafydd

I'm baffled. Is it the same with a fresh quicksave?
To answer one of your previous questions, Start -> Run and type in dxdiag to get the system info.

I don't think I've ever used quicksave; I always save into an actual savegame slot.
What are the keys for quicksaving and quickloading?

F11 and F12 on mine.

I checked Modify/Game/Controls/Customize; for me, quicksave is alt-s, and quickload is alt-l. (That's L, not 1)
Quickload crashes the same way as any other load: I see the progress dial on the left tick around; but just as it gets to the green zone, and the screen switches from showing the load progress to the actual mission, it crashes to the desktop.
Also, I swam around a bit in the river... but the moment I frobbed one of the submerged water arrows, the game crashed to the desktop (with the same message-to-Microsoft alert box).
Something is really, really wrong. The installation seemed to go fine, no glitches. But when I tried to install my Thief Gold, the installation refused to proceed: An error message said TG couldn't be installed on "Windows NT" because of a DirectX issue. Needless to say, I don't use NT; I use XP SP3. However, the disk is an NTFS drive... could the T2 problem relate to that?
I couldn't find any specific problem by Googling, but the solution might be buried on page 234 of the search results or somesuch.
Would it help to reinstall T2 (and try to install TG) while in Safe Mode, then run the 07 to 18 patch again?
Thanks,
Dafydd
