Is there some trick to sucessfully casting a "touch" spell? I try, but because I am getting attacked every second, there is no time for me to cast my spell. I have only been able (almost totally) to sucessfully use "target" spells. :( The few times I did use touch it was on a low lvl (slow) creature, or after using my Paralyze sword.
I have so many valuable (they should be anyway :grr: ) touch spells and enchanted items, that I can't even use...

To cast a touch spell you MUST be close enough to the creature so that it's name appears. Target is much better since it's ranged (like with arrows.) It just fires a blast of magic and essentially does the same thing (and it does area effect too. I'm not sure if target spells can do that.)

If I'm getting constatly hit by an enemy I often jump backwords and start my touch spell (cause as you know it takes a few seconds) and then start running towards the enemy so the spell is done when I reach him.

i can't even keep myself standing when they start hitting me like a sewing machine!!! how can u do all those things? actually i usually levitate to rescue my ass and keep it safe and then drop on the top of something high if there is:)
touch spells are usually more powerful because they cost less charge/magicka for the same damage u give with a target spell... but specially if u are a mage, it is painful to use them with those limited health points. but they worth when u have to. when i first started, "heartbite ring" saved my live many times- i still use it sometimes:)but i don't remember where i did get it)
here is an advice (or close to it) that a mage NPC gave me.(it was one of the few shocking unique advices that i've got):
when there is someone strong attacking you, first paralize him, then immediately cast a powerful touch spell, then start running like crazy:p when u come to a sufficient distance, use your target spells until he gets close again, then repeat the same thing until he vanishes. i havent applied it:) but i hope it helps u.
also one more thing about the target spells:
they sometimes have an area effect, that means if there is a creature that u've summoned and being killed for u in the battlefield, u can damage it more by using area effects... and if that happens, they sometimes turn to you when they finish the enemy. but usually don't have enough time to kill you, because the spell ends and they go... but a dremora gave me an unexpected hard time once:sweat: he just turned and started hitting me with his huge "bugs bunny" hammer. i started seeing dancing stars and had to levitate and let the enemy kill him...
ehem....if we turn back to the main plot, :erm: (i've lost myself again) when i first started palying with this mage character i had a useful ability that comes from my sign (tower): shield 50 pts. (i think it is even higher than the sixth barrier...isn't it?) it means u can be brave once a day:cheeky: or just wait 24 hours after each fight (thats what i usually did) so if u find some kind of magickal shield it can be useful. or just summon something and cast your spells behind it.
Also there is something else...but i'm not sure because i m just recalling it right now so i haven't tried it yet.( i'll try it in a minute) if u have or can find the telekinesis spell i think u can use it to cast touch spells from a distance. there is something like that in FRP. so it must be possible with telekinesis too. at least u can cast a few touch spells from a distance until telekinesis ends.
ok... i let u go...

The thing about mages...
1. Don't be affraid to spend that magicka. Get at least one high damage spell. I have a 60 damage for 2 secs 20 feet area of effect frost on touch. That will drop most people in one shot. When my destruction will be a bit higher, ill add frost weakness to hit, like 50%. Better a similar fire spell for when you encounter Nords.
2. Before they reach you, do as much damage as possible. A good strat is to slow them down. A target spell that damages their speed and strength for some 30 points is quite effective. Try to find a damage and not drain, drain will come back to normal ter effect, while damage will require healing.
3. Levitate is your friend :)
4. Spend some points on agility, speed and strenght. When you get the resting msg, go spend some $$ on some of those skills. With good agility, you evade alot more.
5. Train light armor. The Dark Brotherhood armor is very good and easy to get.
6. If you feel like starting over, take the atronac sign.

Some great ideas, thanks :D I have trained my strength, agility, speed, to help me dodge, but must not be high enough against some creatures yet. Sometimes I just take hit after hit and don't get many of my own in...magic or otherwise :tsktsk: I do like to use invisiblity and sneak up to cast my first spell. heehee
About Levitation.... is there a way to levitate from flat ground? If I'm on flat ground (as opposed to on a bldg, or hill) I just seem to walk, but can't gain any altitude. I've tried once or twice to jump into the air, and had no results.
Thank you, Kiriki

To levitate up, point upwards (so you are looking up your character's skirt) and then walk. You'll rise into the air. To descend, point downwards. Possibly easier in the 3rd person mode.
I recall someone posting a hint- cast long duration but v. low potency levitation spell (like magnitude 1) on whoever is attacking you- it'll slow them right down! Although they apparently sink into the ground after you kill them that way. Try it, anyhow.

Ha... oh man, I hated that. I had a hard time trying to figure out how to use levitation. My first character got stuck and I used some levitation potions and I got about two inches into the air. Then I finally figured out how to do it... but I immediatly got stuck into the next room. I can't remember how, but I think the door locked behind me or something.
So I had to start a new game...

Yay! thanks alot, Ania I'll try that.
Wouldn't it be cool if MW had some kind of counter that would count down and let you know how many seconds you had left on a potion or spell. The little icon in lower right could be like the bars for health, magicka etc. Or it could maybe be similar to the breath bar when you're swimming.
Lol I am still learning the game and already want to make improvements.

it would be much better if we could use the charge of the item as we need. i mean like levitation and invisibility or chameleon items, if we need to go from a building to another under chameleon, the charge of the item could begin to count down, and when we reach the other building, we would stop it, that way we could use it as we need...like batteries...i think that would be much more realistic. the power of the item would be like keeping us invisible each second. not like just spending an amount for casting...ha?:)
