I think GBM is being sarcastic.
Obviously if you include every two-bit nobody who ever got paid a dime for picking up a bat or ball, then that brings the average wage for "professional athlete" down somewhat. I would merely question the usefulness of that methodology when you could take a recognised subset of that large grouping - say, NFL footballer - and get a more realistic picture of what the highest paying jobs in the US really are.
