I don't get how they got that ranking btw. There are links to other jobs with data on there and according to them General Surgeons make more than Anesthetists (which sounds right to me, especially in the UK) so what gives?

FWIW an actuarial buddy of mine laughed when he read the actuary listing. He said he never would have entered the business if the salary expectations were as low as listed in this article.

Medians. Medians are a fucking stupid way of representing data like this.
If you had 20000 surgeons on 10 quid a year and 20001 surgeons on 400grand a year, the median is..400grand.
Extreme example, obviously, but still: badly represented data.

The closest exception to the enjoyment factor is probably in actuarial work because unless you get specialised quickly and get into consultancy it's a fucking pit of a job. Years of full time study and full time work in high stress environments (average of around 8 years I'd expect) with monotonous numerical work (unless you have a passion for that, in which case good on you, you soulless excuse for a human) with the only possible reward being compensation. There are hundreds of actuarial departments full of zombie stats-processors who never complete their qualifications despite the pay increases it promises due to the fact that so much of it is automated and the exams are purely to justify a historically high average costing to companies.
 Hahaha, hilarious stuff there Scots Taffer. I don't think I'm totally soulless, but I do enjoy me some math. I like you am motivated by the big bucks and on the face of it (
http://www.glassdoor.com/Salaries/actuary-salary-SRCH_KO0,7.htm) actuary salaries look pretty good, right? I think the non-traditional route though is key. I've been reading a lot on forums about using one's background in actuarial sciences as a way to get into investment banking... need to do more research though.

Why didn't I become a doc like my gramps
No God complex? ;)
I have to call shenanigans on this list though; seems they've excluded rather a lot of very well-paid jobs (professional athlete and industrial lobbyist spring to mind) for no apparent reason.

As discussed, its because the list is based off the Median income, not the mean.
I'd suspect that there's quite a few unknown athletes(and probably in non-big league sports) who don't make all that much money.
Gingerbread Man on 14/12/2009 at 22:02
Really? Unknown players of minor league sports not getting paid multiple millions? I shall have to ask to see your proof, monsieur.

I'm not suggesting you have to be soulless to enjoy actuarial work, just that there is plenty of it out there if you're not careful and just chase the money. I consult with an actuarial group fairly frequently and there's a mix of people there who genuinely enjoy the work and others who are just cranking the levers and churning out the numbers.
