I didnt see many of those but 3:10 to Yuma was excellent, as was American Gangster. Crowe rarely dissapoints.

Anyway, since you guys don't agree with me I must assume you didn't watch it. It's an incredible spanish movie, you could hang every frame of it on the wall it is simply gorgious, and it has a villain you can really despise. It's is pretty violent at times, not a kids movie even if it seems like that at first so send them of.
I saw it (with subtitles). It was... different. Definitely unique, and most definitely a villain you come to loathe. But I'm not entirely sure I enjoyed it.
After Ratatouille there's no doubt that I had a great time. I left the movie genuinely hungry, I wanted to rush home and cook something fancy. I loved the animation style and the story behind the movie. Brad Bird can do no wrong.
With Pan's Labyrinth the reaction was more along the lines of "Whoa... that was fucked up. What the hell did I just watch?"

I don't get the raving for "3:10 To Yuma". Sure it was stylish but hollow and shoddy in the extreme - poorly plotted, clumsy characterisations and an oh-so predictable ending. I fell asleep, in the theatre, during the climactic gunfight. Perfect example of how incompetent Hollywood can be.
I mean, how many members of your posse need to be murdered before you handcuff the perp's hands BEHIND his back? And what sort of father rides up, children in tow, to a freshly blooded gang of psychotic robbers, in the middle of nowhere, to get his friggin' cows back. And what's with the coach drivers miraculous, overnight recovery from a gut shot?!? And...
Ratatouille worked not because Bird does spectacle but because he does great stories and respects his characters and his audience. 3:10 flew right through the station and didn't even blow its whistle.

INLAND EMPIRE
I forgot about this but then, I haven't cared about Lynch since Mulholland Drive left me stranded in a white-noise landscape of mediocrity.

Runner up would be
Noise, an Australian thriller about a cop with tinnitus. Great acting.
Sounds interesting, haven't heard of it. I want to catch a few Australian movies though, I remember wanting to see that Aboriginal movie ... something canoes. I saw one movie from this end of the world: Black Sheep. Fucking terrible.

My favourite new film this year would be 'The Lives of Others'. I know it won the foreign film Oscar last year but we didn't get it over here in NZ until this year.
...
'There Will Be Blood' and 'Sweeny Todd'.
I'm interested in Sweeney Todd, any Depp/Burton production usually guarantees my bum on the seat, but not sure at all about There Will Be Blood. I don't know if I like Paul Thomas Anderson, Magnolia was interesting but I thought Punch-Drunk Love was rather boring.
I've got The Lives Of Others to watch, only got my hands on it recently though. Didn't know it won an Oscar either.

Into the Wild was extraordinary cinema.Thoroughly enjoyed Bourne Ultimatum for entirely different reasons.

Didn't Cormac McCarthy write NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN? I want to see that one soon. I read Kings THE MIST a hundred years ago so I want to see that one too if for nothing more than nostalgia. Very faithful to the story I'm told.
Bourne was damn good just for the action. Damn good action. 300 surprised me not just for the action, which I expected to be good, but because I found I gave a damn about the characters. I even got caught by the story. I mean hell, you know how it ends but still that with my last breath spit at thee type spear thing. Ah hell. It was cool. Everythings cool with The Hives pumping full blast I feel like doing the Snoopy dance. Woooooo hooooooo!
Hot Fuzz was no Shaun of the Dead though. Anybody seen I AM LEGEND? Surely not an OMEGA MAN remake right? Grindhouse was damn near silly but in a good way.

The Lives of Others is a fantastic film. My family is German, and my two uncles live in East Germany (DDR). I know one of them was being watched all the time because he was so outspoken. Not enough to get him in trouble, but just enough to keep the Stasi and his neighbors always watching him. He lives in Weimar close to everything historic. If you're familiar with Weimar, it's close to the Grand Russischer Hotel.
I was really surprised at the last half hour of the film. I would recommend this movie to anyone.
I'll never forget the tears streaming down my mother's face when the wall fell down. You might just tear up a bit watching this movie if you have any ties to the DDR.
