My favourite new film this year would be 'The Lives of Others'. I know it won the foreign film Oscar last year but we didn't get it over here in NZ until this year. An absolutely brilliant and flawless film. I think it hit me much the same way that 'The Fountain' affected you Scots. I thought 'The Fountain' was good with moments of brilliance but quite flawed. It's a pity the project was scrapped initially and restarted at a significantly lower budget because it did seem quite comprimised in places. Aranofsky is still one to watch though.
Other goodies were 'Zodiac' which I actually think is Finchers best work to date and 'Ratatouille' which is now my second favourite Pixar film after 'The Incredibles'. Someone needs to get Brad Bird a copy of Grim Fandango!
The bad films would be 'Pirates 3', '300', 'Transformers'. Also 'Knocked Up' was a huge disappointment after all the great reviews it got. I didn't buy the main characters arc at all.
Most of the other great looking releases won't be out here until next year. I am so amped to see 'No Country For Old Men', 'There Will Be Blood', 'American Gangster', 'Rescue Dawn', '3:10 to Yuma' and 'Sweeny Todd'.

Actually yeah, The Lives of Others is brilliantly done.
3:10 to Yuma was alright, American Gangster is about 20 minutes too long, Death Proof was as Scots said hit and miss, lol.

Zodiac, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and Ratatouille. Hands down my three favourite films this year.

Another vote for Ratatouille. I thought it was hands down the best movie all year.
Hot Fuzz and the Bourne Ultimatum for the runner-up positions.

Oh ok :o
Anyway, since you guys don't agree with me I must assume you didn't watch it. It's an incredible spanish movie, you could hang every frame of it on the wall it is simply gorgious, and it has a villain you can really despise. It's is pretty violent at times, not a kids movie even if it seems like that at first so send them of.

I think it may be because it came out in 2006 in a lot of the countries represented here, rather than 2007 as in the Netherlands, so technically we'd have had it in last year's thread.
Edit: and (

INLAND EMPIRE
actually I think it was 2006 but it only came out here this year and it is absolutely hands down the most frightening and intense movie I've ever seen. Add to the fact that I had never seen a David Lynch film up to this point and it was pretty much guaranteed that my mind would be blown.
It's the fail of the year for me.
Well, the first hour was good, but then.... Also the fact that Lynch filmed it with some consumer digital camera led to loss of his trademark picture quality.
Mulholland Drive as well as Lost Highway were much, much better, downright different level.
