So RPS put up a list that I can kinda agree with in general: (

I'd query Descent being a 'space game', because, well, you're never actually in
space when you're playing it. Aside from that, they got number 1 entirely right as far as I'm concerned. Elite fans might not be too chuffed about that, though.

Well it's an good list if you're only counting spaceship games with a prominent realtime combat component, tho the heading "Space Games" suggests something broader than that.
Henke's Top 5 Space Games
1. FTL
2. Lunar Flight
3. Elite: Dangerous
4. Decent
5. Freespace

Pyrian's Top 5 Space Games
1. FTL
2. Homeworld
3. Mass Effect
4. ???
5. Profit!
...I don't play many space games for some reason.

Yes. As Pyrian just succinctly sent it up, that list isn't so much 'space games' as it is 'space sims or thereabouts', for which it's a reasonable bunch of similar-ish games lumped together.
Also, 'Decent' is exactly how my friends in school used to pronounce it, which I always thought was slightly unfair.

Okay, that is faintly ridiculous. Top 10 Mortal Kombat games in a franchise that only has 10 cardinal games, and 9 spin-offs/remixes/whatever?
What's massively ridiculous is that they haven't recognised that the best MK game is, of course, Mortal Kombat Advance. Nothing else compares.

And Fallout 3 gets best western RPG of all time.
This pick was manufactured to maximize controversy. By no objective measurement would anyone seriously contend that FO:3 is even the best of the Fallout games, much less "best western rpg of all time." This is just a strait up troll.

Clunky UI aside, the first Fallout nailed the atmosphere and the setting, IMO. I really should replay it sometime soon.

Ok, my top 5 space games.
1. Hardwar or X3 (ok Hardwar is set on Titan not outer space, but it's my favorite of the Elite-likes so I nudged it in. If it has to be an Elite-like in pure space, then X3 would take its place)
2. Star Ruler (my favorite of the Homeworld-like genre)
3. Little Stars 2 (handheld micro-4x. Gets in only because I play it constantly on my train commute)
4. FTL (you all know it)
5. Space Engine (pure sandbox exploration, each new version gets a little more polished and gamified, and with orbital mechanics added it's just about taken over Orbiter on the pure spacecraft sim front)
Runners up or not exactly what we mean by Space game I guess: Orbiter, Kerbal Space Program, Space Engineers, Lunar Flight, Alpha Centauri, System Shock 2, Dead Space
Well rated games that don't really do it for me: the Mass Effect series

Have you played Elite: Dangerous Dema?

My current graphics card could't take it, but I've watched probably a few hours worth of let's plays of it, so I get the gist. It looks great, and I'm sure I'd love it. I love what I've seen.
I played quite a bit of X3 on my last computer before it conked. I actually like the kind of inane depth it has because I have that kind of statistical meticulous personality. It's the reason I like the Paradox Grand Strategy games so much, Victoria 2 most of all. It'd be hard for me to pick between E: D and I guess X Rebirth is the latest one, since Elite also scatches my itch for really visceral sims better, but it doesn't scratch the managerial itch like the X series. (Edit. This is assuming the patches for XR made the game as good as X3. I saw the first release got abysmal ratings. If it still sucks, then I'll stick to X3 or wait for the rumored X4.)
Practically I imagine that'd mean I'd spend short bursts playing Elite for the sim parts, but I'd stick with X_ over a long game, but I'll need a new system to test that hypothesis. (Sort of a pipedream anyway since I don't have the time for massive time-sink games like I used to.)
