It's the musical equivalent of partying when you're sad, partying when you're happy, partying when you're both and you just don't give a fuck. Not to mention James Murphy's lyrics make me feel like I'm in my late 30s after a run of questionable choices and questionable relationships after a life of trying to follow my dreams with depressing pragmatism in the back of my mind threatening to destroy them, all the while taking solace in the friends I can count on (and sometimes in the ones I can't) and, fuck, it feels good to party. And, yeah, the music's good and his singing is awesome: hoping and hoping the feeling goes awaaaay.

He's kind of an asshole though so there's that against it.

mired by a "what the fuck" approach
contradiction in terms, sir.
Also, I listened to "You Wanted A Hit" just now because I didn't remember it devolving into noise, and that's because it actually doesn't...? "Somebody's Calling Me" gets way more abrasive at the end.

Oops, I meant marred. And after 5:30 it becomes "noise" for me. Anyway. Horses for courses clearly.

I dunno, everything Jackablade says about LCD is true, and that's actually one aspect of him I tend to hate as much as I love (really depending on my mood, it can be encouraging or even more depressing). The dependably lovable aspect of him is that he makes great dance music, it's all about tension and release.

So who's going to let me in on the hipster in-joke that's LCD Soundsystem albums, because people saying they love this stuff are clearly being ironic, right? I've tried to penetrate both
Sound of Silver and
This Is Happening, finding the latter to be eminently more approachable than the former, but still mired by a "what the fuck" approach to songwriting and music. Great sound at times, but the lead singer is utterly terrible. He cannot sing. Songs like "They Wanted A Hit" irritate the living fuck out of me as I like 2/3 of it and even like the content of the lyrics but then it devolves into noise, seemingly to make a point? I fucking hate that shit.
I'm obviously missing something here. Someone clue me in to what is good about these guys.
edit: Drunk Girls pretty much speaks for itself though.
editedit: fully anticipate this post rankling the musical intelligentsia on here/ I'm only half-serious in the above post but I still don't get it.
I would've thought Sound of Silver was far more accessible and likeable, really. Murphy's warm analogue dance grooves (not the most accurate description but I'm running with it) and his voice are a like it or hate it thing for some, but since you like most of it, I find it strange that you couldn't get into SoS. I found a lot more actual tuneage in SoS, compared to This Is Happening with all of its irritating deconstructions.
And there's some real dry wit in the lyrics (North American Scum, heh), mixed in with the affecting - Someone Great and All My Friends trump almost everything from This Is Happening, personally.

Sulphur, my comment re: Sound of Silver is not up to date, I tried to listen to it when it topped people's Best Of's a couple of years back and couldn't penetrate it at all. This one I've had marginally more success. I should probably revisit it.

I'd like to see you dance to it. (Seriously dance music wtf)

Well, you obviously can't Cha Cha or tango to most of it. (Or maybe you can! I don't know how to do those yet :()... and a lot of it's ripe for the DJ mixing table.

I thought Someone Great, and All My Friends, and Losing My Edge were alright. But for the most part I don't get what's so great about that LCD guy either.
Not dissing the guy or asking for explanations of his appeal, just saying "Scots, you're not alone".

I've never liked LCD Soundsystem one bit. The singing is horrible and the music is just....insipid? Idk, I've just concluded I don't "get" LCD Soundsystem. To my ears, it's just music for hipsters who can't dance (I should love it in that case though).
