I don't listen to Kanye but one album I forgot to mention was B.o.B. Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray. Dat shit is dope. Lyrics be all tight 'n' shit, and the music is surprisingly diverse.
It kind of ends on a sour note though when Eminem comes in with his typical RAAUUGH IM ANGRY AND HATE MY MOTHER spiel.

The College Dropout it damn near blew my head off; it sounded so fresh, had ambition while still hitting all the mainstream buttons and in the middle of it was this interesting character: an arrogant, genuinely talented, idiot prone to bouts of self-loathing (and as we later found out, self-destruction) who could be both very self-aware one moment and completely clueless the next. I mean, I'd sure as hell never want to actually hang out with the guy but in these day of the vacuum packed pop-star, I find his divisive, contradictory nature sort of refreshing.
I've really got to get a copy of this new album now.

Yeah, you're probably right. He did well with the first couple of albums on there, I seem to remember. I suppose I was expecting a bit of fame fatigue from them. What you say is true though. He's got that "I'm a complete showman and I know it" quality about him which is pretty distinctive in a genre that seems to have lost much of its irony.

I think any humour in that is quite involuntary. And it seems to me you and Scots like to see way more subtlety in this than can be reasonably assumed from Kanye and his music.
We're talking about a guy here who takes pride in never having finished school and not reading any books. As Viv suggested it seems a lot more likely that he's simply a retard.

Kanye can make absolutely bangers, if he wants to. Looking at his career, he has surprisingly wide array of songs that all work in their own ways. Always nicely produced with enough variety to keep him fresh.
I think he's poor at the mic though, be it with or without raping autotune.
