Yeah, I think I sorta overdid the overtly acerbic rant thing there. Sorry. I did actually mean the asswipe part, though. :D
As for the chauvinistic sexism bit, I'm not touching that. He's hardly the first to harbour that sort of viewpoint -- you could accuse the Stones of the exact same thing.
Quote:
FUUUCK I'M A MAN YOU BETTER RUN WHILE YOU CAN BECAUSE I CANT HELP IT IM A MAN
I sort of interpreted the lyrics to Runaway as 'run away because I'm a jerkwad who's no good for you' sort of thing. Such is the nature of art, high or low - open to differing viewpoints.

And I haven't even talked about the warped image of females and relationships that artists like Kanye display habitually. FUUUCK I'M A MAN YOU BETTER RUN WHILE YOU CAN BECAUSE I CANT HELP IT IM A MAN
I could be wrong but that song seems to me like a fairly honest confession of how Kanye sees himself and others - as self-involved doucebags who can't help but be entirely superficial and pick holes in women, and as a result the women should run far away. It could be giving him entirely too much credit for self insight, of course.

But it goes on:
I don't know what it is with females
But I'm not too good with that, hey!
See, I could have me a good girl
And still be addicted to them hoodratsIn which Stones song was a similar sentiment uttered? All I can think of is (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3HemKGDavw) Led Zeppellin's Ramble on and even that is quite different, less "Run or deal with it" and much more "Good bye, I have to keep looking for the Queen of Queens".
And of course The Who had "I'm a man" which is joyous parody of the juvenile feelings Kanye expresses.

Selectively quoting parts doesn't work when the rest of that bit goes:
"And I just blame everything on you
At least you know that's what I'm good at"
Don't you see any self-loathing in there at all? The song's riddled through with it.
As for Stones' lyrics, Under My Thumb comes to mind, and parts of Brown Sugar.
Kolya on 20/12/2010 at 23:56
Of course I see the self-loathing, I just think it's completely faux. It's not even a "sorry", just a "That's how I am, a jerk. Hey, let's drink to the jerks!". That sort of manly pride in knowingly doing the wrong thing to others, especially women is exactly what I'm talking about.
Okay Brown Sugar is about one of the most fucked up songs by the Stones, an exploitation fantasy about a sadistic slave holder. Jagger has said several times he doesn't know what was on his mind and he wouldn't write a song like that today. Which sums up the problem with later Stones songs imo. But I don't think it's similar, it's too over the top. Jagger is not actually expressing approval of slavery and abuse. This is steamy, but not serious. One of my favourites by the way.
Under my Thumb, the girl who once pushed me around...
The change has come, she's under my thumb

You guys know Kanye West is legally retarded, right?
Scots Taffer on 21/12/2010 at 01:12
Kolya, I think he's saying that "it's time to have a toast" in resignation to the fact that he cannot change, he has tried (not very hard, admittedly) to change and been unsuccessful, so he's moving on. It's hardly congratulatory or celebratory given the tone of the rest of the song - if anything it sounds distinctly more like drowning his sorrows.

I still dislike his style, but you may be right about that. I guess I could look into more of his songs, but that would just be to prove a point. Mainly I was surprised that he showed up here and on my favourite music site, both of whom I attribute to have good taste in music. So I had to speak out on this important matter.

Tough guy thread is one below this. ;)

Kanye topped Pitchfork this year, or near to it. The world has gone topsy turvy.
I only bought two things this year that are from this year. Trifonic's
(http://www.trifonic.com/music/) Emergence and Eggchan's
(http://www.junodownload.com/products/bubble-boy-ep/1606202-02/) Bubbleboy.
So they must be the records of the year.
Well, ok, they're not but they're pretty cool in their own way. I've been liking more soundtracky stuff of late. Trifonic is kinda rock-y electronica. If you know Telefon Tel Aviv you've got a pretty good idea what it's like. Eggchan gets filed under Dubstep, which would probably annoy purists no end. There's only one proper dubstep instrumental on there. The rest have really complex production and dense instrumentation with influence from all over. One track in particular sounds like a lost Future Sound of London jam.
