ALL SHALL KNEEL BEFORE ME AND MY BACKPACK ROCKET
Hey, at least there was no new Winger album this year...

Hey, i can actually participate in one of these threads for once, and it's pretty much solely because last.fm added a "recommended new releases" feature. Before that, I was totally out of the loop when it came to new music. As a result I also managed to find a few music blogs that shared my tastes.
1.
Goldfrapp - Head First

http://img826.imageshack.us/img826/4645/foldert01.jpgPerfect electropop. A flawless album. A particular highlight was listening to this album as I stared out the plane window while descending through the clouds to land in Queenstown, New Zealand. One of those moments that makes me think the universe is alright, sometimes.
2. Klaus & Kinski - Tierra, Trágalos

3. Re-drum - Another Path Between Universes

http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/1401/folderdf.jpgCan be downloaded (
http://www.last.fm/music/Re-Drum/Another+Path+Between+Universes) here. Sample-heavy electronic music somewhat in the Boards of Canada vein. I particularly like "A Long Run", "Remembering the Time", and "Dieu".
4. Turin Brakes - Outbursts
Inline Image:

5. Caribou - Swim
Inline Image:
http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/2280/folderb0.jpg6. Caro Emerald - Deleted Scenes From The Cutting Room Floor
Inline Image:
http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/1641/foldergz.jpg7. Frightened Rabbit - The Winter Of Mixed Drinks
Inline Image:
http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/4266/folder012.jpgHonourable mentions, in no order:
Basia Bulat - Heart Of My Own
Bonobo - Black Sands
Laura Veirs - July Flame
Berry Weight - Music For Imaginary Movies
High Places - High Places vs. Mankind
Booka Shade - More!
Röyksopp - Senior
The Books - The Way Out
The Drums - The Drums
edit: and for good measure, here are my top 10 most listened artists over the past 12 months, from last.fm:
1) Boards of Canada
2) Les Baxter
3) Goldfrapp
4) Klaus & Kinski
5) Bonobo
6) Hexstatic
7) Four Tet
8) Susumu Yokota
9) Basia Bulat
=10) Queen
=10) Nouvelle Vague

3. World's End Girlfriend - Seven IdiotsWhatever this jap releases, it's always bound to amaze. The sounds he weaves into his compositions are just so original. Not many artists can take any genre or any sound and effortlessly place it into an album full of opposite sounds. The production is staggering as usual. I'd recommend this guy for anyone who hasn't heard him, because he's one of those artists that broaden the word "music".
Oh shiiiiit thanks for pointing this out. I've had trouble finding news about this guy- tried his website once and it was like a bizarre game of Myst with many rotating gears. I wasn't blown away by the music in Les Enfants du Paradis, but I do like the way he endlessly swaps between melodramatic crescendos with a deranged attention deficit disorder. Also, love the song titles: Teen Age Ziggy, Galaxy Kid 666

Winger's still alive? :wot:
Also, that Frightened Rabbit album, Shakey? It sucks. Not half as good as Midnight Organ Fight. Who'd've thunk getting a bassist and being happier in life would make for watered-down music?

Depends on who you ask. They've done a few albums in the last 5 years, but have morphed into more of a prog-rock thing, and Winger himself is doing some really cool "world" music type stuff ala Peter Gabriel edging toward ambient. I mainly listen for Rod Morgenstein because he's a badass on the drums.

I adore the linked song. There's some questionable usage of slap bass on the album, but it grows on you. It also quite heavily tints toward breakcore in the latter songs. It's not "beautiful" music for sure, quite opposite from Hurtbreak Wonderland, but interesting and original nonetheless.
