At the moment I am replaying Thief 2. My original first experience with Thief 2 was that it was a really hard game. You always had to keep focused and careful. And I also always liked Ironmaning missions. This sounds like a really dumb complaint but nowadays (after playing all games atleast once) it is too easy. As far as I know the Ultimate diffculty mod doesn´t work with a tafferpatched T2. I would like to have a more challenging experience so I am wondering if there is a possible way to change this.
Btw: can it hopen that the difficulty glitches out because the guards really don´t search for me that long, in general they didn´t act like I remembered Expert guards to act. I changed some files to get the Necro age running.

Try The Dark Mod for a real challenge. ;) IMO, the missions, and also the gameplay, are quite a bit harder than any of the Thief games. Sometimes i swear about the difficulty though, and wished, they would cater to less expert Thief players. Especially the guard paths can be a bit annoying IMO. While in the Thief games, guard paths are pretty predictable, in The Dark Mod, there are missions where 6 or 7 NPC's can enter the same room (because guard paths, and also guard shifts are altered in some missions), so it's very difficult to figure out where to hide your bodies, if you're a KO player. I already brought that up in their forums, but, frankly, i think that most people there prefer unpredictable guard paths, and hard difficulty. Whenever i play TDM after a long break then, and get back to the game, i'm a bit overwhelemed by the difficulty. And i would consider myself a pretty experienced stealth game player, i played all Thief games, most Splinter Cell parts, Dishonored and what not. TDM is definitely the hardest of them all. At least when you're up to not being seen, and playing the game stealthy.
BTW, just to add that: Back when Thief 1 and 2 were released, at least the german games mags considered those difficult games. And i do think for the most part of the players, they are. At least when you're not used to stealth gameplay, and need to learn how to play the games.

Definitely. TDM is a whole other level of challenge. Melee combat is easily 10 times harder than in the Thief games, because you end up hitting your opponent's armour more often than not. Thief discourages you from combat. TDM punishes you for it.
If you are looking for a T2 challenge though, might I recommend (
http://thiefmissions.com/search.cgi?search=%2Bauthor%3Dgort&sort=title#m) Gort's missions. Rebellion of the Builder was the most brutal experience I ever had with Thief. I managed to finish the first mission, but forget about the others

I like a lot of TDMs design ideas, but I find the difficulty too much personally.

Yeah, unfortunately, i get annoyed quite frequently about it too... i also think that that's a major point why people will get frustrated when trying TDM out, too. Especially when you're new to that kind of gameplay, you will have a really hard time with most missions.

I end up either ghosting more than usual, or killing more than usual in TDM. The good thing about TDM is if you have broadheads, you can dispatch opponents with one in the eye (sometimes works even if they're alerted), which is what I tend to do when I'm stuck. It becomes a challenge when they're wearing visors...
