Yeah.. I gotta admit, the first time is almost always a terrifying experience like no other. I played the demo when I was 10.. After getting killed by a pair of hybrids ( I ran like French border guard with a coupon for cigarettes past the first one ), I wouldn't leave basic training.
This is also pretty much the EXACT SAME THING i did. I just hovered around the weapons booth blowing up those seemingly harmless droids. Which turned out to be the exact opposite after i started playing again.

I was wondering how you know if you are hidden or not in System Shock 2. I've heard you can use stealth and being a huge fan of the Thief series, I tried that and was promptly killed by a space monkey.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The only way you can tell is by looking at how dark an area is. There's no way to know how hidden you are, but you should be able to guess by the level of shadow in an area.
The SS2 levels are not designed for sneaking.
(

My flatmate used to play games on my PC. He enjoyed RTCW quite a lot. I eventually convinced him to play SS2. I sat him down, put headphones on him, got him to do the training and then left him to it while I went and watched television. Oh, and turned the light off on my way out.
5 minutes later I heard his scream from the other end of the house. He never played it again.

I had just finished Doom 3 a couple weeks before, and had not been all that scared, so I wasn't expecting to be by SS2 either. After all, it had way crappier graphics right? ;)
Of course that line of thinking was shot down as soon as I encountered the first ghost. Right after that I had to enter the room where you first meet the Hybrids. It still takes me a while to work up to courage to enter that Med-Sci hallway for the first time. Those damn voices, they get me every time! :wot:

I turned around, saw a mutant running up to me screaming "I'm sooorrryyyyy!". I freaked out so much that I had trouble reacting in a useful way and died.
"had trouble reacting in a useful way" can I guess describe what I did when I met my first hybrid. In the I lost all control of my right arm resulting in my spinning the mouse about while getting whacked to death. :p
I'd say there was a period of a month between that first attempt and me actually picking the game up again.
But then, I was 13 at the time. What's your excuses? :sly:

After a long break from SS2 I always fear that particular meeting, just seeing the hybrids run towards me and I have a wrench and barely any skills makes the situation uncomfy. :o

Nameless Voice, so really SS2 isn't as diverse in it's gameplay as first believed?
I've read in reviews that there was a stealth option to the game.
Hmmm...
Nameless Voice on 21/6/2007 at 10:05
Oh, you can certainly sneak. It's just not very easy to do due to the brightly-lit levels and lack of visibility gem.

There are stealth elements. If you hack/destroy all the cameras before they see you, you certainly have a lot less bother getting through the game.
Also some of the psy powers allow you to hide and do things from a distance.
I think the stealth, like a lot in the game wasn't implemented properly. Its easy to design a level for run and gun but a lot more difficult to get it to work properly with proper stealth tactics.
