I have to say, it always bugged how Stark could manage to retrieve his helmet. I mean the entire HUD/interface is in there, he wouldn't be able to fly the thing without it...
You seriously think he controls everything by voice commands and waggling his eyebrows? Seems pretty likely that the suit would have internal sensors allowing him to, say, control flight with his feet, repulsors with his hands, etc. That's pretty much the only way power suits could be used effectively, by making them a prosthetic extension of the user.

No, I don't think it's all in the helmet, obviously, however I was thinking that jumping from a low-flying C130 at night with no goggles, no visibility, and no feedback would make it pretty difficult to catch something smaller than a football in time before it reached the ground.
(I mostly meant
visual interface)

So I just came back from it. It's all over the place, and has heaps of problems. I don't want this comics crossover bullshit in my movies so stop building towards it, Scarlett Johanson's character has no purpose besides looking hot in tights, and the big shooty spectacle in the end is devoid of suspense, and I don't think even the writers have any idea of what the thingy in Starks chest is supposed to do anymore besides generate excuses for the plot.
But.
Watching RDJ be Tony Stark is still tons of fun, and it seems like the filmakers enjoyed themselves tremendously making it, which is pretty infectuous, even if the result's a bit of a mess.

Bit of a mess but fun nonetheless. The final fight was a liiiiittle too much of an echo from the 1st one though. And yeah, I can do with a less huuurr secret nod to comic book fans bs when it's handled with this much (lack of) subtlety.

Just saw it.
More of the same popcorn fun as the first and as usual a great job by RDJ and Paltrow. I fear Sam Jackson is becoming a caricature of himself between Nick Fury and Mace Windu. Black Widow was cool but useless and came off a bit like, "HEY LOOK THE AVENGER INITIATIVE REMEMBER GUYS?? GUYS???"
Horrible, horrible pacing problems. The writers had to find places at the beginning to cram the Iron Man suit in there just to remind us that this is what the story is about. The action toward the end was great, Mickey Rourke was great, and like I've said for about 15 years - Robert Downey was born to play Tony Stark, which makes the whole thing worth it. In fact, I would say these would be run-of-the-mill super hero stories without him in the starring role.
Also what Morte said: the people involved are having a fucking blast and it just kind of rubs off on you enough to dismiss some of the glaring problems. Hopefully the directors cut has a bit with GP and SJ making out because every time they were on screen together my pants almost caught fire. Yeowzaa!

Did they make the dialogue up on set again? That's pretty much why I watched the first one.

My diagnosis is that they should've dropped the entire cast of SHIELD altogether and made the final fight scene more climactic. It's too bad the plot wasn't focused, despite excellent delivery by each individual actor. I'll still get the DVD when it comes out. Hopefully putting the pieces that ended up on the cutting room floor back in the movie will somehow tighten up the plot a little, although honestly I'm not holding my breath.

Agreed, on further analysis the movie really doesn't hold up too well when considering the elements of the plot coming together as a whole - the climaxes of the arcs for Ivan and Hammer are almost embarrassingly thin.

And the dad subplot was just terrible.
Guess what, daddy loved you after all! Daawwww- hurrgh. Iron Man 2 is not something you want to spend too much time thinking about, because the plot is just a mess.
