I can't hear 16000 or above, but the computer fan's running and I have mild tinnitus. 15000 is clear as a bell, though.
If those of you without it are wondering what tinnitus is like, I imagine it's something like having that 16000Hz file playing constantly.

Sorry to hear that, Aja. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be (either when you think about it or are forced to confront it), I understand that most of the time it probably blends into the background but when I come back from an especially loud concert, I usually have that mild ringing for 2-3 days after. I've got a weakness in my left eardrum though as it was perforated at birth.

Okay, this is strange. I changed my seating position at the desk here, and now I can hear 16000. I think what might be happening is that the ringing in my ears is not at a constant frequency, so it sometimes masks the sound files.
Can't hear 17000 though. And my comparision is not entirely apt - listening to high frequency sounds puts a kind of irritating pressure on your ears that is quite uncomfortable. Tinnitus, on the other hand, doesn't give you this feeling. You (I, at least) can hear the ring, but it's not uncomfortable, it's merely there. I've had it for as long as I can remember, so it's not really frustrating to me.

I can hear the 19,000 pretty well and the 20,000 if i turn it way up. Beyond that is nothing. Edit: Scratch that, I can still feel it in my head when it's really loud on 25,000.
I think the things that one can do with sound is amazing. That news story reminds me of an episode of The Outer Limits.

I guess mine's between 19 000 and 20 000. If I turn it up I can just barely hear the 19. Everybody knows that that's where all the music is.

I can hear 14000 and recognize it as an external sound. As for 15000, I cannot tell it apart from the ringing in my ears. This is the first time I saw the word "tinnitus," by the way. I guess that is what I have, also.

For some reason my ears just started ringing. :[

I suspect the quality of your speakers plays a part in how high up the scale you hear.
Anyway, I'm somewhat amused that students have been using TECHNOLOGY to create a 'adult-proof' ringtone when the easy solution would be to turn the phones onto vibrate mode and put them in their pockets. :weird:
