I plan to buy Skyrim for PC soon but had a couple of questions for those who own it:
What DRM/wrapper bollocks is there? Will I be saddled with Games for Windows LIVE if I buy a boxed copy? What about on Steam?
If I buy a standard boxed copy does it come with an awesome map like Morrowind did?

Skyrim uses Steam and does not use GFWL. It stores your savedgames in the steamcloud. The cloth map was only given to boxed copy pre-order customers. To get it now you'd need to get the massive collector's edition (dragon statue, etc.).

I had some trepidations when starting the install of my retail copy as I absolutely detest Windows Live. But the game actually installed straight to Steam, much to my relief and even joy. Didn't know if this was because I had Steam open in my taskbar or not and really don't care since I didn't have to frak around with the accursed Windows Live.
I bought the Collector's Edition, so I really don't know what the standard copy contains, but the C.E. is AWESOME! Though I'm still fighting with the dragon who refuses to sit on his rocky perch properly.

Cool, thanks. It threw me because the box (on several websites at least) says Games for Windows on it. Might just buy it through Steam then since the map is no longer a draw.

The map doesn't really feel like cloth; more like the kind of stuff you might line your kitchen cabinets with. Still pretty awesome, though.

Games for Windows is just a "we need a graphic to go where the Xbox/PS3 graphic would go" branding thing. It has nothing to do with the service.

What Digi said. Games For Windows means it's passed some MS check, and is allowed to be branded as such. Games For Windows Live is what everyone hates so much. It's when you see the orange Live tag that you should worry.

Didn't know that, but thanks for clearing it up. I'll be more cognizant in the near future; not that it'll do me any good if I really, really want to have that particular game and it happens to be GFWL, though.

Fallout had a mod on Nexus, that would remove all GFWL stuff. You could buy the game, install the game, then install the mod. And you would never be bothered or reminded of GFWL.

AFAIK all GFWL games can be "fixed" with a single .dll.
Dunno how legal that is though.
