I'd have to agree; the spec you rattled off sounds more like 'bleeding edge' than 'respectable'.

Power seems to have plateaued a little. My 2 year old £1000 PC can still handle anything I throw at it. Don't bother going for bleeding edge stuff just find a new game and match the recommended specs.

I'm just at the point now, nearly 4 years after building my current setup, where i'm thinking about upgrades too. Same sort of situation except my graphics card is noticably dying on me so thats kinda first on my list.
Problem is that entails a new PSU as my current one isnt powerful enough for the 4870 card I have my eye on that demands 500w...and then those Quad Cores look so pretty...hrrrh.

Do the words "Alan" and "Wake" mean anything to you?

Spend $600-$800 on a decent computer that can play modern games at medium settings (your monitor still works, right?).
Hell, mine's $800 from a year ago and I can still max out most games.

I'm sorry, a location of "whoring your graphics, yo" carries some responsibility.
GO BIG

Mine's from two and a half years ago, but you're right, $800 today and you should be able to set even current games to pretty high settings.

I rebuilt my computer nearly 12 months ago after some cataclysmic failure that I still never quite got to the bottom of. I made it up totally kickass, hot shit dualcore, oodles of RAM, top end graphics card - the first time in my life I had a totally tricked out PC at the bleeding edge and then I proceeded to play no games on it, zero, for about 9 months.
So, uh, really it all depends on investment versus return.

Ignore this.
A 360 is the last thing the OP needs. Those things have the lifespan of goldfish plus you can't upgrade consoles, can you?:p
