If we're going to spend money on space technology, it should be on working out the best method of removing the thousands of piece of junk from the Earth's orbit, and on monitoring potential collision threats from meteors and asteroids.

Umm, yeah, the US is really spending alot on infrastructure. So why did a bridge collapse in Minnesota and; I dont' know; kill 100 or so people in the process
Uh, that's precisely why the focus is on infrastructure. Uncle Sam is cracking up, apparently.

There's about 5 to 6 thousand TONS (or tonnes) of space-junk in pieces larger than 4 inches (10 cm). Even much smaller pieces could be fatal to people and machines in orbit so cleaning those up are as crucial as radiation shielding. That's also a considerable source of high grade raw material for orbital construction.
I bet mining old landfills right here on planet dirt could pay similar dividends of cleaning up the mess and extracting valuable resources. Really, cleaning up should be just as stimulating to a consumer economy as making the mess in the first place. Maybe not as much fun but in terms of economic activity, just as beneficial.

Wouldn't a commie bridge be atheist anyway, which is almost worse than pagan.
{in gigantic, booming robot voice} Communism is the very definition of failure!

We could blast them out of orbit with nuclear weapons. Every nation around the world could launch everything at once. It's perfect.
On a less insane but still not sane note how about super magnet bot?
Laser destroyall bot?
Space janitor Bill?
If only the earth sucked more it would just fall out of orbit. I'm sure we can make the earth suck more. We have so much practice.

Clearly, if you send a space janitor, his name has to be Roger.
Tocky on 15/3/2009 at 03:45
Roger, Roger.
Actually I'm just dicking about here while I wait for Bill Hicks videos to load. Why did he have to go so soon? We get to keep Larry the cable guy and yet HE has to be taken. I got nothing against Larry, he keeps rednecks fingers off the triggers of thier guns, but goddamnit you know?

I never double post but one of the first things I thought of was the FOREVER SHIP and it bothers me I did not mention it. I no longer remember the sf story it came from only the line "some as say the ship she'll stop and some as say she never will" but rather than a moonbase I would propose this as the foolhardy project.
You cannot get past entropy. Even in a working biosystem it will wind down without reintroduction of energy. Still, what if we could build a large enough system that it could survive between stars? We would have to stock and build it like a mini earth and have an energy source like a mini sun and give it all our knowledge which wouldn't be nearly enough so the inhabitants would have to spend all thier free time in pursuit of better conservation of resources and the mining of more and it would of course be impossible even with genetic engineering of ourselves but damn what a grand thing eh?
It wouldn't benefit a damn soul here of course but what a grand, noble, and foolish thing, just the sort to give unreasonable hope we will beat the forever game yet. Anyway Nicker I feel bad I killed your thread. The forever ship is the best foolish thing we could do in my estimation.
