Well at least this movie stands more than a cold chance in hell of being better than anything Berman & Braga ever created. (Oh Gene, I still mourn your passing! :( ) I've never forgiven B&B for totally fucking up Star Trek after Roddenberry's death.
I really don't care who plays which character as long as they don't try to make Shatner look 20. Unless, of course, the movie is a comedy.
And NOT Colin Farrell for ANY part!

During what point in the series did Roddenberry die, anyway? Somewhere in the middle of TNG?

He died in 1991, which was season 4 of TNG, however he apparently didn't do a great deal with seasons 2 or 3 either, due to ill health.

what continues to amuse me with the star trek franchise, me being a relaxed fan (i'll watch it, not necessarily understand whats going on, but can see why its good) - is how writers/producers of the tv shows and movies continually see it as the "future" to go back to explain things that happened "before".
why is it not viable for them to have a new movie; set it a couple of centuries after the end of the voyager/deep throat 9 tv shows and just go bananas with their imaginations.
then, if that movie premise is successful; build a new tv series around the movie - this gives an excuse to use "untested" actors.
meh.

From evidence to date, I'd have to suggest a general lack of imaginations to go bananas with.

I can hardly wait to see the scene where Kirk and Spock debate the use of the split infinitive in Kirk’s why I want to be a Space Captain essay, entitled “To Boldly Go”. That and the panty raid on Uhura’s dorm…

Not to simply keep a dead thread alive, but I'll add a "new member's" (and Star Trek fan for 40 years) 2 cents.
Sounds to me like Paramount has finally decided to go ahead with the idea promoted by Harve Bennett in 1990. Bennett is the guy who took over the movie side of the franchise with "The Wrath of Khan" and produced the next several films, (including the Voyage Home... the whale movie), basically making it "Star Trek" again... as far as fans were concerned.
(Yeah, he's also the guy who produced the "Six Million Dollar Man"... but we... won't go there.)
He wanted to do "Starfleet Academy" (not the game) instead of Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country, with exactly the same premise of the new Abrams film. I think the idea was to rebuild the franchise and do it right. Paramount (and the powers-that-be that many fans feel trashed the franchise) wanted to milk the original cast as much as it could, while it could, and went with Star Trek 6. Bennett left and never came back. The franchise sorta went downhill from there.
I don't spend much energy or thought on being a StarTrek fan and haven't for a very long time, but it would be nice if this was done seriously and correctly. Unlike those, IMHO, frightful most recent StarWars film-story-things... whatever they were.
It could revive the franchise the way many older Bond fans are hoping that the new approach to 007 and the Fleming material might revive that one.
but then again, it's Paramount.
You know... the guys who created the UPN network?
God, sometimes I'm frightened that I even remember this Star Trek stuff....
thanks for listening... I'll go back to my book, my candle, and my porridge now... :)

So - what do people make of Startrek - New Voyages? I watched them with morbid interest and frankly got confused with the second episode (too much trek inside knowledge need i think). They definately did a good job of capturing the spirit I think.

I LOVED those ST movies! If Bennet is the guy responsible for them then this newest may be worth seeing after all.
Do not be ashamed. Star Trek was great til B&B totally mucked things up.
