safe sex - something fr which I'd really rather abstain than indulge.
DOS gaming rig system specs:
P166/MMX
2gig HD
64 megs EDO ram
40X CD-ROM
floppie
mouse (real mode DOS drivers work)
Voodoo 3 2K PCI 16meg
CL's SB AWE 64 ISA (sometimes a blessing)
nic card
no printer
W's 98 FE (upgrade fr W's 95 ver)
SS1 - no hoohoo.
CyberMage - some hoohoo but all workie.
Several other DOS games - some hooho but, eventually, all also workie.
TN - everything that could go wrong has gone wrong but it's finally installed & running (Thx to the vesafix info found here. TYVM! for that.) except sans sound. Intro animation & movie cut scenes work. Drops me to starting room & mouse works & I can move around/navigate but I cannot hear anything.
What is so confusing is that it auto detects a SB AWE 32, tho it's, in fact, an AWE 64. I'll cut them some slack on this one, cuz I think my SB card came out after TN. Whatever. Select auto configure & it then tests fine for sound & music. Ditto when selecting SB 16 instead, as it's autoexec.bat string is SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 E620 T6 & according to the info found here (
http://fourfatchicks.com/Rants/Misc/DOS_FAQs.shtml#boot)
T determines the type of Sound Blaster it is. In the above example, it's 4. The available types are:
1: Sound Blaster 1.0 (the original Sound Blaster).
2: Sound Blaster 1.5.
3: Sound Blaster 2.0.
4: Sound Blaster Pro (a popular choice with new cards).
5: Sound Blaster Pro with OPL 3 FM chips.
6: Sound Blaster 16.
I hear sound during the sound & music tests, as well as during install, whether I just let it auto configure for the detected AWE 32 or when I manually select instead the SB 16 type sound card. (Haven't yet tried any of the other sound card choices or a manual configuration, so I've a ways to go here before I give up completely.) Have also tried altering the tn PIF autoexec.bat to include the following additional sound card lines fr the system autoexec.bat:
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 E620 T6 (even thru only the D1 portion of the string)
SET SOUND=C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\CTSND
SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAPE:E MODE:0
& have also tried it w/just portions of the SET BLASTER string only, but to no avail.
Have installed from the CD via windows.
Have installed fr the CD via pure DOS.
Have copied the CD contents to HD & installed fr HD.
Have yet to try a 'boot disk', tho if I've memory enough to run the game & mod the tn PIF to include the above system autoexec.bat sound card info but still have no sound, what more is a 'boot disk' solution gonna bring to the table?
Is it possible that maybe loading more devices high might free up enough ram to also bring the sound along?
Have read the TN thread re 'running TN on a modern rig' umpteen times. Have read the 23 posts returned via a search of the Terra Nova: SFC forum when using search word 'sound'.
What also has me stumped is finding any means, short of uninstall/reinstall, of re-selecting the type of sound card, a laborious & time consuming task, inc de-frag after uninstall, on this 5400 rpm HD & slow processor clunker. Is there another way & I'm just missing it?
Format C has crossed my mind & it may yet come to that. Someone less anal than myself would be happy just to be able to play TN, even w/o sound, or thankful just to have SS1 finally up & running, but I want it all. Any guidance anyone can provide is most welcome. TIA.
