Remember when thread starters could delete the thread?
I do. That was abused rather a lot. However, maybe that was something at the back of my mind that sparked this idea.

Sorry, but then he should find another forum with younger people.
According to <A HREF="http://www.ttlg.com/forums/member.php?u=8518">his profile</A>, he's even a few days older than me. And I'm an old grumpy fart.

But what if Skronk posts a serious philosophical thread, and he wants to keep the lame jokes ("nine") out?
Dude your jokes mitigated the bile that was being spewn in my last thread, you're welcome to post anything you want in my threads, assuming I continue to invite trouble.

Young in mind, you <s>old fart</s> nice person [edited by Gray] ;)

That's twice, tungsten. Now play nice or I'll ban you from this thread.

I was only using you as an object to argue a principle. I can't promise any more lame jokes in your philosophy threads.
I'm not saying Skronk (or anybody else who starts a thread)
should have the right to moderate it, I'm just saying it would be an interesting discussion of what might happen
if people had that right.
[Edit]
Of course, it could get
veeeeery interesting if Noidypoos got moderation priviliges over his drunken threads...

Therein lies one of the, if not
the biggest problem with it.
Certain people cannot be trusted. I'm sure for the most part that people could be trusted, and that's even if they chose to use the 'moderate your own thread' system. I don't believe many people would.
It was bad enough when certain thread starters would delete their threads, and it's bad enough now that people delete/edit their posts to remove the content when the 'debate' isn't going their way. I can't imagine it being anything but a mess if they had the ability to delete/alter
other people's posts, or close/delete the thread again.
No, it won't happen, not even if I coded it so that only a specific usergroup of 'trusted' people could do it because, as best we can, all members are treated the same.

I can just see "discussions" where thread starters delete perfectly valid posts just because they disagree with the opinions expressed in them.
Gray on 6/9/2005 at 08:28
Yeah, I'm getting more and more convinced it was indeed a Bad Idea. Good points, Dave. I remember what that was like, and it could get ugly.
Of course, I was assuming "serious" discussion threads, but since we're talking CommChat here, of course all that is out the window per definition. I forgot.

My brother visits a forum all the time that has paid and unpaid memberships. The paid members start threads with a red or green 'light', apparently, and the ones that are green lit go to the public forums, which are inclusive of both paid and unpaid members, after a set period of time, usually a day. The red lit threads stay private to paid users.
