I just bought a Bioshock-capable PC, but I couldn't help but turn my head at this li'l puppy: (

Official site: (
http://eeepc.asus.com/)
It's an ultra small lappy from Asus that runs a custom flavor of Linux, but can be used with other Linux distros with some effort, as well as XP. Now shipping, and in pretty iPod-esque colors!
I would have killed for one of these in my college days, what with those tiny micro-desks mounted on the right arm of each chair in lecture rooms. And at $300, I could have afforded one as well.
Anyone see one of these in person? What do you think?

I almost got one of these to play with, but that's what it is at the end of the day "a very capable Toy" but that said a Student or Child would find an EeePc eminently practical. Ive heard of people getting Windows Xp, Vista and even OSX running of them...
If one comes along cheap enough and I have the spare cash I may end up getting one for Toilet surfing :joke:

Thread, rise from your grave.
Short story: I bought the cheapest EEE PC available, a green Asus EEE 2G Surf. 2GB hard drive, 512 MB RAM is plenty for a slimmed down cut of XP and my browsing and writing needs. $300 got this thing from Amazon to my doorstep within three days, free shipping (YMMV).
Squeezing an OS and apps onto the teensy 2GB drive requires an almost Zen garden approach, and it gets mighty hot. It's good quality, it's small, it fits my basic computing needs perfectly. I couldn't be happier with it.
It seems that the presence and success of this device has caused a small upsurge in UMPC interest among laptop manufacturers, but a lot of these devices are projected to be $500 plus, which kind of defeats half the point of something like this, but some interest is better than none.
Just thought I'd post this in case anyone was interested in the EEE and had any questions about it.

I got a mental picture of you looking in every toilet down the line in a public restroom. :joke:

For the same price, you can get a used laptop on Ebay that can run Half-Life 2 (I did).

Price is only one consideration. My interest in the device was also in its portability: with power brick, it takes up about as much space as a hardbound mystery novel. In the same case that would ordinarily barely fit a full-sized notebook and power supply, I have the same, plus study books, plus writing book, plus an s-f novel.
This device is best as a compliment to a desktop, but isn't the best replacement for one... but it could do it in a pinch. It probably won't play Half Life, but that's what the monster sitting next to my desk is for.

I've got an 8 gig one because my friend bought one but didn't want it, so he sold it to me for less. I'm not sure I'd decide to buy it myself, because you can get a low-end laptop for just a little bit more.
It's probably fair to say that it's just a toy, but it's a great platform for old games. I've run SS2 on it (sometimes low FPS) and Diablo 2. Pretty snazzy for ebook reading, and the keyboard isn't as bad as you'd think: I spent some of a weekend debugging a program for school on it. If you have lots of flash memory on you it could be quite capable.
(It'll probably run Half Life, I've seen that on youtube. Not half-life 2, of course.)
