I'm hopeless. I feel so bad about killing the goblins, every time I hear their idle chatter. I feel bad for the trolls, too. I wish there were a way of not killing them. Yes, yes, I know about some amulet but I had to make a troll angry just to get past him. And there is always an angry goblin popping up somewhere. I feel that it was a bad thing to force the player to fight these civilizations. Now I can understand the rat men. They have no redeeming traits. Ah well...
Another problem I have with Arx Fatalis is the complexity. I have so many places I have to go back and visit. I wish it was slightly (but only slightly) more linear. I spend so much time running between levels.
Okay, I used a sword on a wooden stick (the kind you insert in levers) and it turned into two wooden stakes. Is it possible to get stuck by doing this? I can think of at least one place where you need that stick. Also, is there any use for the wooden stakes?

The one on the bridge near the troll mines can be avoided until you've got the amuletAbout the goblins, I agree with you on having a choice... but initially the goblin guard isn't really friendly either...

On a positive note, a spare stick is always nearby if you
really need it. However, if you destroy that one...

Maybe you haven't had the chance to read Azrael's note yet

Well, I used the levitate spell to get past the troll on the bridge, but all other trolls are unfriendly, and I need to pass at least one of them. Not one of them has been friendly.
No, I haven't read that note just yet. I think I'm going to have to restart...bummer.
[edit]Well, I restarted. I never found the troll you speak of before, because I accidentally locked the gate again after locking it, and thought that it was the wrong key. In addition, I never found Arx because I was "going to go back to that staircase later." Now I should get the hang of it. Thanks for your help...
