In dire need of some more space, with the projects becoming larger and more common these days, I went shopping.
I toyed wth getting a small NAS and setting myself up for all time, but decided to just get one big drive instead. Then almost by mistake I got a 2TB WD 'green' series SATA2 thing. It's specs are generally typical, but it was nearly half the price of the regular model. Mainly this seems to be because it is 5400rpm instead of the usual 7200rpm my other drives boast (and is also cooler and lower power).
With the much larger size I thought this might be a problem, but so far it hasn't had any trouble with playing back large video files or smallish editing sessions consisting of large video files. So far.
Any of you guys had any troubles or otherwise with big drives at that speed? Or can RAM and processors cover for you these days?
As this thing fills or fragmentation gets worse do you think it'll become a problem?

As long as it's not a system drive, 5400rpm is plenty. It's quieter and like you said, uses less power. Modern 5400rpm drives are fast enough - uncompressed Blu-Ray video is only about 10MB/s and your drive has an average transfer rate of about 80MB/s. I have two 5400rpm drives and am perfectly happy with them.
