...Do they go both ways like PMs or are they threads on your profile page only?
It probably wouldn't make much sense if replies weren't notified, but I ask just in case.

Yeah, they're one way. If someone replies to your post on their wall (on their wall) then it doesn't act like FB to notify you. You only get notified if people post on your specific wall as I understand it.

In my opinion visitor messages should act like a thread within your personal profile, when the replies go back and forth between two walls like now it looks strange unless you choose to view the specific conversation.
To avoid this you can simply reply to visitors by posting a visitor message to yourself, but that will screw up the 'View conversation' thingy, and not to mention that the visitor you replied to will not be notified.

Hmm, ok. So the only way somone knows I've replied to them is if they happen by my profile again? No wonder some of those convos seemed a little short.
