Here's some troubleshooting I thought it could help someone. I had the crash to Desktop with no error message problem even after the patch; the problem happened exactly after the savegame had loaded - in the moment the picture of the gameworld (so to speak) appeared, the game crashed to the Desktop and no standart solution (updating drivers, clearing the CD, etc.) helped. Finally (fortunately!) I found a solution: I played the game @ 800x600 and I had my Dekstop to 1024x768; it seemed to crash when the game tried to change its resolution, so before I started playing I changed my Desktop resolution to 800x600 and now everytnig is OK. Hope this help.
