This looks like a fun game... - by Mingan

if I could get around to make it run. At all. I've bought the game recently and I'm currently trying to play it. BUT when I start a new game, it crashes when it's "loading textures". I got it to run once, but IIRC, it featured a short, choppy, soundless intro movie, and THEN crashed when I got ingame. But I was running in my monitor's native resolution (1600x1050), but my graphics card can't cope with that very well. I thought that my GPU might've been overheating, but no luck.
Specs maybe helpful:
Mobo: Asus A8R-MVP
GPU: Sapphire Radeon X1800
CPU: AMD 3700+
Sound: SB X-Fi
PSU: 450W, I think.

Try various graphic options, try it in static lighting mode with minimal settings, try to disable EAX. Update DirectX if it's not up to date. Try different drivers for graphics card (newer, as well as older) + maybe drivers for motherboard chipset. How much RAM you have? This game requires minimum 1.5Gb to be really playable I think.
Check official forums or google for "Stalker X1800" or something like that.
Here is what I found in a minute:
Quote:
I have an ATI X1800 XT graphics card, and whenever I turn up the lighting to even object-dynamic-lighting, the game stutters for a few minutes, and then crashes!
Is this because my graphics card isn't good enough? Or something else?
AMD 2.4 GHZ SINGLE CORE

It appears the card has problems with dynamic lighting mode in Stalker...
PS: it seems this may help (taken from a russian site):
In registry
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]
set PagedPoolSize to ffffffff, then add PoolUsageMaximum with value of 00000028
i.e.
"PagedPoolSize"=dword:ffffffff
"PoolUsageMaximum"=dword:00000028

Apparently, static lighting solves the crash problem, and the pagedpool thing fixes the chug. Mostly. It's playable anyway.

Didn't want to start a new thread, but I've got a little problem.
In the Army warehouses at the Duty camp I got the mission to kill the Freedom sniper. Said sniper kills Skull, the one who gave the mission in the first place. I want to side with Freedom so I get the mission to wipe out the Duty camp. We do so but I can't complete it because it hinges on Skull being alive before the mission begins. The person I'm supposed to talk to, Max, says he'll talk to me after the mission is over.
So I think it'll just sit in my PDA unfinished for the rest of the game. My question is, does this have anything to do with the story or does it in any way hinder me from finishing the game? I'm assuming that I can continue on to
the Brain Scorcher
and beyond, just remaining a loner?

You can't really side with any of the factions properly, just be friendly with them (Better prices from their traders and they don't get annoyed if you walk up to them holding a gun). You can carry on regardless as it won't effect your main quest.

Thanks for the quick response. I'll wipe out the camp anyways :p.

The problem is that game looks much better in dynamic ligting mode, not only because of shadows/lighting quality, but also because effects like bumpmapping and bloom are absent in static mode. And I know X1800 is capable to run Stalker with dynamic lighting, apparently there is some error that prevents it to work correctly. Maybe google will help to fix it.

You can side with Freedom (even though it's tricky, devs thought they eliminated the possibility :) ), but not with Duty.
