Anyway, I get that parents are scared reactionary people. I do. Particularly when certain, particularly nasty, things seem to slip through the cracks of our various social defences. Over the course of my life (my parents maintained close involvement with the primary school I went to) things have gone from kids playing around on bikes for hours before and after school to kids being shepherded door to door in SUVs and never being allowed out unacompanied.
We used to have a good relationship with our teachers, on weekends and after school. Now the teachers and staff rule book is bigger than the syllabus; do not touch the children, don't let them in the classroom after hours, no teacher can accompany a child alone, always have witnesses, no kids in your car, no kids in your house, when in doubt stay the hell away.
Most of this is nothing to do with protecting kids from child predators and other nuts. It's to protect the institution and teachers from any questions of impropriety should children or parents cry wolf. Which has happened quite a bit over the years around the world.
It's not a good situation, however much sense it makes to "parents" ("parents" are the reason Jenny McCarthy is getting her own show. I'm not sure they're reliable creatures. Thankfully I'm sure there's more variety in the species than there seems to be when the podium thumping starts, though at times it's easy to forget).
Still, I'm not sure what to do about it, since this is rather disquieting business and an enourmous reaction to it is understandable (if not always justifiable). So I'm going for nuance again. That'd be a reasonable start I think. "Child abuse" is surely not one thing. Unfortunately people might have to look a bit closer in order to worry correctly.
