What Tocky said (especially the last sentence), and I hate myself for it, but I just can't help it. I've been on the wrong end of the gun a few times and that shit won't happen again.

Before this goes too far south;
There is certainly something about child abuse isn't there, the way it seems that the person who has done it is never coming back. No punishment or therapy or anything is ever going to be enough to convince people they won't do it again, making it just about unique in crime and mental illness. Sure there's people of the opinion that you may as well summarily execute shoplifters because all trangression is basically equal and once you break one rule you'll probably go on to break any rule. But they're extremist nuts. Child abuse has that thing of crossing the political/impression of humanity spectrum.
This isn't to say that a few people haven't established that they are like that, but geez nobody spends much time registering and mapping who has ever been found guilty for somone's death in your neighbourhood. And if you did you'd probably find out the circumstances and what happened after before you condemmed them forever.
This is also somewhat beside the point of the church's behaviour on the subject, of course. But there you go.
Interestingly, none of this is news here or in Europe. We did all this stuff about the Christian Brothers and whoever else in 80s or earlier. It's funny how it took that much longer to come out stateside. I'm sure Sinead O'Connor wasn't expecting the reaction she got for tearing up a picture of the pope from Americans of all people.

I'm ... no I was a little whore when I was a kid, very curious about other friends sexual things, now I wonder if I would have enjoyed going to church more often...
damn, I missed a lot of fun.

That's Catholicism for you. Catholicism is NOT Christianity. Read the Bible, it will tell you the truth and what REAL Christianity is. Don't let this corrupt church hinder you from faith.

... once again SD saves the day when the enlightened apostles were screaming for paedo-Dachau and KKK-lining the lives of those they consider worthless.

Sorry but trying to shift all the blame to one religion is pretty opportunistic in this context. Although catholicism is certainly rife with problems of this kind, show me an abrahamic faith that isn't shuddering along from crisis to crisis at this point.

This argument always reminds me of this quote:
"If all the Christians who have called other Christians "not really a Christian" were to vanish, there'd be no Christians left."

I originally looked up the map of registered offenders in my neighborhood awhile ago at the request of one of my best friends whose little 4yr. old son was raped and murdered by an adult who was not a relative, friend of the family, or a clergy member, but a man who'd already been arrested for child molesting twice before. It took my friend 4 years to decide to have another child (she has twins now - boy & girl) and she wanted very much to know where the registered offenders lived in our old neighborhood. I don't blame her or think she was being paranoid in the least.
The neighborhood where I live now has children in just about every other house and I've gotten to know a few of them and their parents. Believe me, I'm not the only one who wants to know if there's a registered sex offender living next door. It's well known that the recidivism rate among child molesters is thought to be high; thought to be because a lot of offenders do turn out to be family members & their crimes are never reported. My remark about wishing I had a gun was born of frustration, anger, and grief, not because I'm a nutcase; that little four year old boy was my Godson and the sweetest thing this side of heaven. The subject of adults who prey on innocent children hits a seriously raw nerve with me.

It's not just you. But I guess I'm saying there's not a lot of nuance in how we consider these guys and that's probably not a good thing, despite fear and erring on the side of caution being perfectly understandable reactions.

Why not? Americans are a reactionary lot. That's why we prefer a "strong leader" who'll rush off to bomb the shit out of someone and stick with their decision regardless of any truths that may get in the way; instead of a President (like Jimmy Carter, for an example) who will come out and say, "Hey, that was a mistake so I'm changing my mind." We like to react to things without really thinking about the message, or meaning, behind an action--especially when it comes to religious matters.
