GENRES: Nerdcore, and to a lesser extent Hatcore
ASSOCIATED ACTS: Kasparov, Prefekt, Old Snake da CQC MC, Karmageddon, Cumfucius
Nerdcore Rap has been around for a few years but to date no MC has quite been able to shine past the inherent gimmick of the genre. Well, with the release of Kabuto’s “Ill Ron Hubbard EP” this past August, the day has come.
Some of you may be familiar with Kabuto already thanks to his Mass Effect 2-sampling internet smash hit (
http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/16/those-minerals-laments-mass-effect-2-probing-in-a-hip-hop-fash/) Those Minerals but Kabuto’s output reaches far beyond that one track. The guy has no less than 5 albums to his name, all of them free for download on (
http://scrubclubrecords.com/9/category/artists/kabuto-the-python/) scrubclub.com. I’ve worked my way through his catalogue recently and it’s very hit and miss. But his latest EP is remarkably solid all the way through. It’s full of killer tracks littered with popculture-references and savage burns
(“Your music video’s so bad it’s got it’s own Rifftrack” “AD Rock was the only cat you ever bumped that wasn’t dadrock”). Tracks include the obligatory Star Wars track in which Kabuto and Billy The Fridge bust rhymes over a rocking Imperial Death March beat. There’s diss-tracks for Kabuto’s deadliest enemies (on the Rhymetorrents forums). It has the most overblown patriotic song since “America, Fuck Yeah!”. And of course the titletrack, which establishes Kabuto as the Ill Ron Hubbard of Nerdcore, King of the Church of Kabutotology. But the real gem here, the one track that hints at great things in Kabuto's future, is the song “What It Do”. A song which carries
real emotional weight. Jokey songs about Star Wars and Nerdcore-beefs is all well and good but for a nerdcore MC to move beyond being just a gimmick he’s gonna have to get real from time to time. And after hearing this track there’s no doubt that Kabuto is more than just a gimmicky MC in a gimmicky genre.

The rest of his catalogue is available for free download (

I wonder how long it will be before the Big Evil Game Companies try to serve Cease and Desists for people sampling their tawdry, derivative game music. I spent a lot of time in Mass Effect thinking about Akira, presumably because the music is so similar
Anyway I like this. Where's the name Kabuto from? Giants?
okay I just looked it up it was a pokemon lol

I was waiting for an album to convince me current-day hip-hop and particularly white rap wasn't all bullshit, and this isn't it! People talking about videogames to mid-90s beats. Woo. Anti-pop did nerdy-sounding glitchy hip-hop better than this guy ever will, and they split up ages ago.
But you know, thats just me.

Nope, if Sage Francis didn't sway you Kabuto certainly won't. I think we can establish that modern white rap isn't for you.
I love the shit out of it though.

It's a shame. I don't even like MF Doom. I feel like rap has deserted me. Bah.

Ah man, that sucks. To me it feels like hip-hop has been getting better and better over the past decade. All that 90's stuff was great but I never really felt like it was my music. It felt borrowed. It spoke to me but not for me. A lot of this newer stuff feels more comfortable. I don't know why, maybe it's just me that's changed. Or maybe it's a racial thing. Most of the rappers I listen to are white(DOOM is the only real exception). I'd rather not think something like race affects what I like but maybe it does.
