Christ, someone (http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/320/5883/1592c) actually went and held a science conference in world of warcraft. And its affiliated with bloody Science! These are the guys I'm shortly going to be begging to accept my work!

and? If someone held a naruto convention in second-life you wouldn't think that was embarrassing in some nebulous and hard-to-extinguish way? The point is, this is a game in which you spend an awesome amount of time pretending to be a buxom dark elf killing whatevers. Science is an extremely selective, high-impact scientific journal of the first tier, famed for only publishing the most rigorous or exciting of new science. And they are giving column inches to some nerd celebrating doing a raid on WOW.

Well, aside from the scientific interest inherent in a game whose online populace exceeds many 'real' countries and whose online currency is traded against the American dollar to make real world profits, I'd say this is exciting only because you now know that the people who run this journal are kinda the same as you... ie. gamers.

But these are scientists who are studying online gaming worlds, so it makes sense. There is actually quite a bit of science being done on online gaming and what it reveals about people.
