Having no reverence
whatsoever for the source material, I'm not entirely sure how to handle this flashy, explosive, amped-up, jokey, buddy-cop-movie version of (
http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1810045845/video/13526202) Sherlock Holmes.
I do know that it looks more Michael Bay than Guy Ritchie, and that Robert Downey Jr has been nigh untouchable in terms of his picks for the last couple of years so it must have had something that attracted him to the script.
That said, I'm more than borderline entertained by the trailer despite one or two of those action beats that make me involuntarily twitch (the spinny baton move, for instance) and a weird supernatural feel to the plot, but I guess we'll see how it pans out.

I think I'll pass... Out that is.

Apparently they've got Holmes using (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartitsu) bartitsu in the film.
I'm betting the supernatural stuff is going to turn out to be a hoax, a la Hound of the Baskervilles (and I think one or two other Holmes stories).
Plus Downey, Jr. and Jude Law bouncing off of each other in Victorian London (and scantily clad Rachel McAdams), so that's my ticket sold.

Looks like a fun romp but if there is a whiff of real hocus pocus as an explanation of events, it just won't be Holmes.

As Fafhrd suggests, it's likely a ruse on the part of the villain to mask other nefarious scheming.

Hmmm, not too sure what to think about this one. The trailer looks terrible but then again that's true of pretty much any modern mainstream trailer, even the ones for the good films. I really don't rate Ritchie as a director at all, very much a one-hit wonder, but Downey Jr. is on a bit of a roll and looks to have some good rapport with Law. So I think I'm going to wait for the general consensus on this one.

Eh, the preview is two minutes of shit but the movie might turn out alright, assuming it isn't Snatch set in Victorian England (although that might be kind of interesting, now that I think of it).
Thank god they've shitcanned the deerstalker.
Edit: the hammer gag was cute.
Turtle on 19/5/2009 at 04:16
That's a rather foppish hat. Certainly no deerstalker.
If I could ignore the fact that it's supposed to be Sherlock Holmes, it would appear to be a vaguely 'fun' looking movie.
Not 'good', but 'fun'.
edit: shitcanned? Stitch is Rong!
Stitch on 19/5/2009 at 04:19
Holmes didn't wear one, dude.

Holmes
was a prize fighter. Admittedly it doesn't look like Queensbury in that pit, but whatever.
