This is really disappointing. I was hoping that Thief could be played as entirely 1st person game. :( I simply hate 3rd person bits in new Deus Ex. It always breaks immersion for me.

I always loved the tension that came from not having that wide arcing view of the 3rd-Person camera, and having an AI get too damned close (before knowing the AI and player model could collide without a threat), which isn't as tense in 3rd-Person where there's extra distance from me to Garrett and the AI. Feeling vulnerable in Thief is a must! And the 1st-person should be improved. I'd feel better about 3rd-Person in Thief if it wasn't cinematic and arcing around, but locked close behind looking over his shoulder at all times he's not swimming or crawling or going through a vertical tunnel. Standing in a safe place and sending the camera out to scout around, above and below, for threats is for wussies. At least cost the player something, like the Scouting Orb did, and could've done even more.

It sounds like the 3P element is kept to a minimum so I don't think it will break the game.

Thiefessa, I always wondered, are you paid as an Eidos Forums official? Or are you just doing that on your spare time?
Back to the topic at hand: his whole argument's BS. Would Mirror's Edge have been so good if it constantly switched to third-person view during navigation? No, it would have been a nightmare. Either they don't understand or don't care that Thief is the pinnacle of first-person immersion, or it's just an admission that they're unable to code proper body awareness for rope climbing.
Either way, as far as I'm concerned and unless I read news that third-person is totally optional, I'm done with Thief 4.

As with other moderators, I am just a regular person/fan and not paid.
Our opinions are our own, of course. :)

Sure, okay! Thanks for the confirmation.

No problems. :)

Have they not been listening to what people have been saying on the boards for years? If there has to be 3rd person, keep it completely separate from 1st person...or allow the player to turn off ALL third person switching. To hear this after however many years of pre-production and fan discussions on the forums is so disappointing. This was one of the few things fans of 3rd person and 1st person actually agreed upon, keeping things separate...yet...here we are again, with the EM devs doing the same nonsense DE:HR and Deadly Shadows did...integrating two POV's. If you have any contact with them, could you please suggest they give us a menu option to shut it off?

Yes, they have been listening and they are still listening now. But this doesn't mean they are going to do everything you, or a another person, of different groups of people ask. Some people don't want 3P at all, some people want it, some don't mind a little now and again. They have tried to strike a balance between likes/hates and innovation and creativity.... but clearly still veer toward the 'less of' when it comes to 3P
Here is what they said about it (most recent):
Quote:
Thief is a first-person adventure featuring intelligent design that allows players to take full control, with freedom to choose their path through the game's levels and how they approach and overcome each challenge. There are some 3rd person elements - but they're really kept to a minimum, we don't have a lot. 3rd person is used to improve your awareness of your surroundings - for example, during vertical navigation. We're really taking particular care to make sure that we're not jarring players back-and-forth between cameras.

I will certainly ask, yes.

They have a "Community Manager", b1zkit, who says very little to the Thief fans.
Here is one of the very few things he did take the time to say:
Quote:
Nothing was changed because of community uproar. The community was in uproar over speculation
A pretty unnecessarily disagreeable and snarky reply to the notion that maybe the community might have some influence.
