No-one is going to be doing any kind of gymnastics with leather trousers on though. Those things are gross.

Thief is a 1st Person game, hooray! But I don't mind the occasional 3rd Person action. It was fine in DX:HR.
I thought it was handled really poorly in deus ex 3. Near constant uninterruptable cutscenes stopping the game and the game world for you to watch a guy who looks 20 times manlier than I ever will punch some dudes spit out.
several times in a level, and more than once a minute...it got boring fast. Not the best alternative to dedicated melee weapons, and definitely immersion breaking. Which is a pretty important part to immersive sims.

Were you playing it on easy and scarfing down candy bars like no tomorrow? There's no way you can chain together that many takedowns in that short amount of time.
I played it on Deus Ex difficulty, and I'd only see about 3-4 per mission.

I wish I could tell you, but it's likely just hyperbole on my part. I know I usually went for a clean sweep approach in my first and only complete playthrough a few years ago, the cutscene KO's really left a negative impression on me for being as present as they were. I really, really hate it when games take control away from me.

I have to say, I basically didn't use takedowns because the third-person stuff annoyed me too much. I just tasered people in the bottom instead.

Same here and agree with your points. :thumb:

Yeah, they get boring pretty fast. I've changed my mind, I don't want that in Thief.

About the Focus system.

The option not to use it is the same option not to use Garrett's bow--just don't. Thankfully they've attached a cost to it, so it's not always freely available. Before reading the complete post, I, like some others, were instantly reminded of how we were told 3rd-Person cover in DX:HR is optional. It's not quite addressing the issues with it. If they balance it well, I won't ever need it to get through any puzzle, or to survive any confrontation that isn't ridiculous in this kind of game to begin with.

Hey Nic, tell us: is Thief a 1st or 3rd person game?1st person![Yaaaayyyy!]Are there any 3rd person elements?Yes, we do have some 3rd person elements - but they're really kept to a minimum, we don't have a lot. 3rd person is used to improve your awareness of your surroundings - for example, during vertical navigation. We're really taking particular care to make sure that we're not jarring players back-and-forth between cameras.[Like climbing gloves kinda forced us to need 3rd-Person view to see behind us, because the devs didn't simply provide natural movement that would allow a real person to look behind themselves while climbing a wall? Also, if 3rd-Person ever allows the player to see what Garrett could not, it's going to catch flack. Just don't be surprised or disappointed when it happens, if the 3P you've got is pretty much a superpower with no cost.]Quote:
Does Garrett's updated look reflect anything specific in gameplay?Yeah, Garrett is a capable guy and I definitely think that's reflected in his costume. But if you look at the old Garrett I don't think we've changed him that much. He's still that same dark guy, but with more elements to reflect his new abilities.[You could've just said "Yes," Nicolas, but did you mean to evade categorizing what those abilities might be in this Q/A? From previous articles, we are still wondering about the combat.] :laff:
